Disappointment always finds a way, the sneaky bastard. Even when you try for once to embrace optimism..*bonk*, it beats you right in the head when you least expect it. I just finished this Amnesia Rebirth as well and all I can express is, for what I believe is at least the tenth time this year, a resounding
The game does have interesting moments (especially in its second half), the focus on immersion-friendly clean HUD and physicality are always positives and the few basic mechanical puzzles available are inspired, but everything else sadly is a giant missed opportunity, with a dip in quality that I certainly didn't expect nor want from Frictional. Overall, I very much agree with you guys. The gripping writing, philosophical complexity and subtle 'show don't tell'-based steps that contributed to constructing SOMA's brilliance are no longer there: they were replaced by much more mundane dialogues, Tomb Ramboot-like moanings, lots of scripted setpieces and a muh feelings-oriented narrative designed to satisfy the journos' power fantasies, and the abundant exposition throughout the game alongside the uneven pacing and contents didn't really help either.
Even the classic and perhaps more rudimentary Amnesia from 2010 worked significantly better than this Rebirth since it offered a cohesive design where horror and atmosphere came first, and any gamer could identify with its protagonist in an immersive way. It's a better game than A Machine For Pigs in my opinion (which could barely even classify as a game ), but it fails pretty hard when it comes to presenting an engaging story that is capable of sustaining the whole structure without collapsing on itself. If The Dark Descent was for me a solid 8/10 and SOMA was one of the few titles deserving of a 9/10, this one is probably a 6ish/10 accompanied by the typical sad trombone sounds.

the main characters voice is so annoying that instead i decided to give penumbra games a try first.
anyone played them? all of them received ai upscaled 2/4x textures. playing the first game and while it looks a bit dated, gameplay wise not that much different than amnesia/soma, but also dosent seem that scary so far probably because of graphics, puzzles are nice, dont know if i will finish, outdated graphics means im not immersed enough.

Can't get scared anymore by Frictional's monsters.
Starting from TDD they all are annoying instead of frightening - A Machine for Pigs, SOMA, Rebirth included.

What I find annoying is having to babysit a character who is constantly afraid. Look at monsters too long - panic. Hide in the dark too long - panic. During these encounters I feel tense but I'm also very focused and try to move calm and slowly. I can't empathize with a character who is afraid like that. So these fear mechanics are just distracting to me.
But other than that and too much baby stuff with the story I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I welcome that they added some more puzzle mechanics a la Penumbra, something I very much missed in TDD.

Another Penumbra game would scare away the average consumer. That would translate in less sales, less stellar reviews.
Just look at Obsidian's Outer Worlds: praised to high heavens because it was ACCESSIBLE, simple and very colorful.
In today's beautiful age, accessibility and lower difficulty in games means an increased appreciation from the professioNal gamInG joUrNaListS.

So what you're really is saying is that you can't see yourself being scared in her situation? That is bullshit and you know it. Now, not being able to empathize with a pregnant muslim woman is expected though. But as all studios today, must pander to the groups who actually don't play their games. It's just brilliant, why didn't anyone think of that before?!
This game should't exist. The story fits a pure walking simulator, not a horror story or as a amnesia game. Would maybe be very good as a walking simulator actually. I'm not really criticizing the story itself really, just it's not Amnesia.

managed to finish the first two penumbra games and i liked them, they are really good. third one/dlc is just boring puzzles so i skipped, and the unnoficial sequel mods like necrologue is not that great and got bored halfway though and skipped. i know its a free mod and given the many good reviews i thought it would be good but its just not on par with the first two, and it didnt even need a sequel as it ended good.
so anyone who hadnt played them should give a try...now to check rebirth

Amnesia: Rebirth tries to reinvent itself by mixing the intensity of the original with a thought-provoking narrative like SOMA’s. But while trying to do both, the game doesn’t do right by either. The result is something that makes you wonder what could have been, forever living in the shadow of Frictional’s past works.
(This article is based on a press copy of the game provided by the developer.)
Pros:
+ Tactile gameplay
+ Ingenious puzzles
+ Artistic direction
+ Good audio design
Cons:
– Uninspired story
– Lacks the mystery of Frictional’s previous games
– Way too often fails to evoke fear
– Over usage of scripted events and gameplay interruptions
