Many people hate random encounters and I'm one of them depending on the game. Being able to dial down the amount of random encounters would have been better though. In some jRPGs you can't take two steps without ending up in another battle and when you get stuck or have to backtrack it can get extremely tedious.

Okay, just tried the port. It's 30fps menus, 30fps world, 30fps battles and 15fps FMVs. That's in line with the original PS1 version so it's much better than the 60/30/15/15 split we got for VII and VIII ports on PC. Strangely enough, combat *effects* and UI elements in battle are running at 60fps -- it works nice and is very efficient for offsetting the 30fps annoyance -- battle damage/healing floaters are all 60fps and smooth, it's surprising how well it works.
Battle camera/intro disabled options in the menu *really* speeds up the flow of the game and you're not sat there waiting ages for a dynamic camera to sweep over the battlefield before you can finally play. Combat feels fluid, no issues, though the load-into-battle seems to be a little bit too long for my taste but that may just be a Unity issue and once cached it may speed up.
Visuals are gorgeous, no other word for it; the text is crisp and "pops" out at you really nicely, the UI could be *little* bit smaller, but it's crisp and easy on the eyes and the character/enemy models and effect details have been given a substantial upgrade, way more than the typical int-res upscaling we see in emulators. This is a very pretty version of the game and you can see they tried to upsample the prerendered backdrops as best as they could. 4:3 AR doesn't hamper the game at all, there's pillar boxes on the side but with a nice grey gradient that doesn't drag your eyes away like stark black borders do.
Music and sound effects are flawless, daresay they even seem higher quality than the PS original. No midi shit here, no poor samples, the music is HQ and it sounds great.
Boosters are *awesome*! Some of them will really go a long way to eliminating the tedium and grind that FF series is known for late-game, and while the three Config Menu boosters are permanent once you activate them (Insta-learn skills from items // Max Character Level and Magic Stone Count // Billions of GIL) the game-adjusting boosters can be toggled at will either via F keys or shoulder buttons on the controller in the PAUSE menu. You can hyper speed, which forces the game to run 3x faster - great for farming and skipping long gameplay scenes. You can set Safe Travel on, which lets you ignore all random battles except bosses and events. You can set 9999 battle damage, which is obvious, and finally an Assistance booster that locks your HP/MP to max and gives permanent trance in battle. These are all toggles and can be used at will
I heard there's some issues with XBONE controllers in Win10 and Unity, but 360 (and by extension, PS3/PS4 with xinput) controller works perfectly and has high-res button icons. One final thing; you can skip FMVs
I take back what I said, Square Enix have gone to town on this and I feel absolutely confident this is by far the very best version of Final Fantasy IX out there. Period.
~edit~
Also, the manual on Steam.

Honestly, aside from the 30fps caps and the slightly large UI elements, I'd go as far as to say this is a flawless port.

By far? According to your post it seems slightly better than psx emulation (but much less annoying to set up). At least if the vertex accuracy is emulated beyond console specs.
Thanks btw. Seems ill go for the pc release this time. After I finish the ps2 version for X...

It's pretty cool that they emulated the touch screen, and you can use your mouse. As Sabin said, it's a good port. I'd say it's worth a purchase.
PC Specs: A Maganavox' Odyssey
Tweaked to play Frogger, Lemmings & GTA4

You use the VPN to change your country to India, not to buy from Store.

That's because you can't use a VPN for purchasing on Steam any more *unless* you have a currency that's valid in the country you're VPNing to. If you use a VPN to get USD, you need to have a US credit/debit card, a US PayPal address, or a Steam wallet card -- but then the wallet card will automatically convert to your *native* currency based on your registered Steam address/location.
If you just want to force the store to change prices, I recommend VyprVPN. It's free and gives you 500MB a month data which is enough for VPN purchases/activations.
For me, I just changed my Steam address to a fake Indian one No VPN needed, now my store displays INR currency ^_^ |
You don't need VPN for purchases, you can use Skrill on India store which allows you to use any credit card for payments.
Only time I used VPN was to change my country to India, haven't touched the VPN since.

It's not in config, silly, it's one of the F keys (or triggers on the controller when you're in the PAUSE menu)

Im pretty disappointed.
Some backgrounds show some horrible oversharpening effects (huge white halos around the buildings in the second screen with vivi for example). The psx version already had those so the mistake has already been made back then, but the upsampling clearly enhances that nonsense (just checked against an unfiltered psx version). Maybe not that relevant, as not all backgrounds are affected.
You cannot hit the speed up button in cutscenes. Within the first hour I already wanted to speed up a few clearly useless ones. Yet I still managed to speed up one cutscene somehow and then couldn't disable it, ruining it. You also cannot speed up saving/loading/screen transitions, meaning all of these are actually a lot slower than a sped up emulated version (just checked). Now this pisses me off and I greatly prefer certain emulators over this. The only really cool thing is that this preserves the tempo of music, awesome! Also F1 is a terrible button for this feature, if you want to switch often and quickly as I do. Dont have a gamepad.
Additionally the cursor memory setting is a joke. The positions are reset to 'attack' with every new battle. Great memory. So you can't utilize anyone effectively who shouldn't just attack with the speed up. Don't know if the psx version is the same.
Still this seems to be the best version, though im not nearly as happy about it as sabin . The most obvious downside of the psx version is the limited rendering accuracy (even with the GTE accuracy hack of ePSXe), no no encounter boost (THX!), and emulator set up time. I also find every psx emulator very annoying to use and also often had problems with frame pacing (I do enjoy snes, gb(c/a), nds, wii, ps2 emulators). Plus speeding up the game ruins the music obviously. Didn't try to fiddle too much with espxe and had terrible performance in battles, though I'm assuming this could be fixed (perhaps saner frame buffer effect settings?). If I continue to play this I will probably take the PC version. edit 3: performance with ePSXe in battles is still bad... didn't think performance would be a factor in this decision urgh
As for the game itself, the aesthetics are imo easily the worst in the entire series. To me Zidane seems like a 9 year old furry hitting on girls . This cutesy style works really well for me with low resolution 2D graphics and I love the snes titles of the series but in 3D it just looks silly to me. But at least it looks like a design choice, unlike FF7 where I still want to know what these tumor people are supposed to be.
Btw. Could it be that battles are super slow in this game? I also found seemingly random pauses? Haven't cranked up the battle speed in the options yet.
Edit 1:
Have I spoken too soon? I just tried grinding and noticed that even the transition screen to battle is completely unaffected by the speed up and takes fucking ages. Maybe I'll take the PSX version after all. FUCK that shit
Edit 2:
I sped up another potentially cool and emotional cut scene. Im starting to dislike this port very much
