Looks weak I think the series got better and better, rewatched the last 2 seasons and they were fantastic, season 2 i liked even more now. Favorite is still season 3.
But nothing in this has peaked my interest, none of the actors, or the time period itself.
Season 1 had a cool story, but Freeman gets old very quick, he's such a one-note actor, he's got like 2 expressions - surprised look and even more surprised look. He's the same person in all movies he's in. Thornton was the highlight for sure (and the woman police officer is great too), but apart from those all other seasons had way more interesting characters i think. S3 is among my all-time favorites when it comes to how many characters i find interesting and well acted. S2 was a bit better there than S1, but not on pair with S3 + story wasn't as great as S1 or S3 imo..
season1 was the best, very dark, original score, martin and bob were true detective level. after that went too silly, were ok but not season 1 caliber.
All seasons are dark, S3 especially.. Incredible performances by Mcgregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scoot Mcnairy, Goran Bogdan, Carrie Coon... McGregor's and Stuhlbarg's performances are my favorite of the series.
I did enjoy S1 a lot the first viewing though, second viewing not so much, S2 and S3 were still strong.
