We are happy to announce that the wait is soon to be over.
The 64-bit update for Shadow Warrior will hit Steam next week!

The new version of the game uses either a 32-bit or a 64-bit executable and DirectX11 for Windows Vista or later. This update should give the game a significant performance boost.

The previous version of Shadow Warrior, using DirectX9 will still work on Windows XP 32-bit systems - so don't be afraid that it stops running.

We have also included an additional bossfight with Zilla (be sure to check it out!) as well as some minor bugfixes.

I will let you know when the patch goes live.

That boss fight was previously unique to the console versions, so it's nice that they're finally adding it to PC.

Very cool. I wonder if it looks about the same as the slightly downgraded console versions, or as good (or better) as the original version.

Took a look at the downloaded files, this patch actually adds a folder called "dx11" to the existing game with all game files in it built for this new version, I guess a plus would be that this ensures compatibility on older systems and this way you can also choose if you want to play the older build or this new version though it also doubled the file size of the game.

Game looks the same to me but I'll have to check that comparison Consolitis posted, performance is vastly improved however but I just remembered I had different hardware back then (Well a different GPU at least.) so that comparison got fucked. Very Happy

Hi,

I was programming the DX11 Shadow Warrior version.

I'm not a big a fan of FSAA as it's not so great at removing jaggies, but is very taxing. Clearly we need some better anti-aliasing solutions in our engine. We have totally rewritten our engine for this update. It took us more than a year to do that and we simply ran out of time to restore FSAA or implement better anti-aliasing algorithms.

I checked it out last night, seems fairly identical as far as my memory is concerned and, like JB, performance is flawless now *but* I also have better hardware this time, so it's not a fair comparison. At least before I couldn't enable Mirrors without crippling framerate in some areas on a 570 but it's not really a surprise that a 780 can.

~edit~

Man my memory sucks Sad

http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2315052#2315052

Yes, I had two 570s and couldn't max it out with 60 sustained. I can now on a single 780, not a single issue, everything full speed with all cranked settings.

Hi,

I was doing programming for DX11 Shadow Warrior version.

1. Foliage. We did replace foliage (grass, junk etc.) placement algorithm, so it distributed a bit differently now. Just as previously, foliage is placed randomly, so in some places it can be a bit less or more dense in DX11 version. We didn't decrease the draw distance nor average foliage density.

2. Lighting. All lighting changes were made by our graphic artists, who decided to improve looks of this game by tweaking lighting and post processing.

3. Shadows. Shadow filtering algorithm was improved, so now shadows have less jaggies and look better. It's mostly visible when you compare tree shadows from the beginning of the game.

4. SSAO. SSAO was totally rewritten. DX9 version had a lot of awful SSAO artifacts (especially in motion), which now are gone. Additionally it was tweaked to be softer and more realistic.

5. Performance. Performance is much better, because we got a bunch of new engine programmers who have totally rewritten the entire engine. It took us more than a year, to do that. Because of the sheer magnitude of changes we have introduced there will be inevitably some differences between versions, but we didn't cut anything, we just worked really hard for a long time just to squeeze every cycle we could.

So it probably now looks like the console versions. Whatever, personally I don't think such small differences matter at all when there's a massive performance boost coming with them. edit: and the original version is still accessible if one prefers that.

The optimization increase is huge. I can run the DX11 version maxed at 2X DSR (from original 1440p) with 60 fps. However I think it looks like shit compared to the older version, the lighting is way too bloomy and oversaturated now. Also for some reason they took out FSAA, now the only option is FXAA.

I think I could enable it without having fps drops only after several patches. However, I do remember that when the game was released I had to turn it off.

I thought it was always this bloomy? I seem to remember it being quite a bloomy game back then.

One other curiosity is the lighting and exposure. As with everything else, these appear identical on Xbox One and PS4, but there are differences with the PC version that cannot be explained by simply changing a setting. In some scenes, the lighting sees contrast and exposure ramped up on the consoles while in other scenes, we found the reverse situation with PC sporting the more contrast-heavy image. There doesn't appear to be any difference in shadow propagation or light sourcing in these instances, however, leaving us to wonder where the difference stems from.

Thanks! Dying Light was fantastic, I had a blast playing that and definitely rated it above Dead Island Very Happy

Yeah, I'm not seeing a huge downgrade.. just more bloom and brighter areas. The shadows are certainly nicer and being able to run Mirrors and all the others cranked up is nice indeed
