An older build of UE3 from the looks of things, lacks some of the newer improvements the engine has had (Or well had several years back.) so I guess they've spent a long time in development.
(No separate SystemSettings.ini for example which was something implemented many years back.)

Somehow the config folder or project name is "BulletStorm" too which is curious but not really a issue.

Something like a first person adventure game though with FPS elements but apparently killing people messes things up so it should be avoided from how I understood though it's up to the player.

Plot is all over the place but I have a feeling the mind-screwing is intentional and will be unraveled later on if the player manages to reveal the full ending or something like that, plenty of achievements have things about dealing with various characters so there's probably some choices later on too.

EDIT: Kinda similar to say Condemned or Outlast in presentation but not gameplay but you might feel some familiarity to those games and others though there's not really much actual horror so gameplay wise it's different.

The photo technique for textures is also very jarring, worked pretty well in Ethan Carther but here it feels more like they're covering up low-poly assets and dated shader and lighting with photographic textures kinda like texture modding for older games although a few older games did have similar techniques but pulled it off better.
(Character models in particular don't fit in at all, granted games such as STALKER had that problem too.)

EDIT: As for puzzles well so far it seems that since developers think that players are unable to solve anything on their own you get one of those iMagic phones that does everything for you, thermal, radar, camera+scanner and instant text and voice hints plus little helper lights and other guidelines.

It's not downright terrible or anything but I wouldn't expect too much from the game, Area51 (The other Area51 game on UE3 that is.) and Deadfall are about on par I suppose being from the same developer as budget games though they had their moments and could still be entertaining. Smile

yeah from whta i played so far its quite interesting mix of the genres with great atmosphere (mainly audio) and interesting ideas
.... the story so far is weird ... but i guess thats part of the deal with it being set in nut-house and you often dont know whats real and whats not

I'm not too good at reviews other than some loose opinions or how to say but I have the feeling they wanted to try something a bit different though not completely new as to still be familiar to players and they had a existing UE3 license so they simply kept working away on that which is why this particular UE3 build seem to be a little bit dated though it's likely using some custom updates from the developers.

Main thing is probably down to budget so it doesn't have quite "AAA" production or presentation values and a few features might have been dropped too. (Something with how players would have been able to "invade" each other as controlling AI soldiers I think.)

I don't think there's too much else coming out at the moment so it might be worth a quick check at least. Smile

The game is...interesting. Doesn't excel at anything in particular (there's shooting, but it's more of a secondary feature - there's investigation involved, but the puzzles are straightforward), though the fairly solid (so far) cryptic narrative and how the story pans out with the mystery, good voice acting and desire to know more get me going. Razz It's fundamentally a linear-ish story-based walking simulator, only with advanced additions like the smartphoning abilities from Condemned and pew sections with the nosc0pe corner gun.
The biggest sad trombone ironically (given that it was the #1 selling point at first, before it became multiplatform, absolutely not a coincidence Pffchh ) are the visuals, which look objectively dated, the lighting is simplistic, the "photorealistic" textures are just slapped all over the models like in the 2000s, and so on. Still, nothing too game breaking, since the presentation is actually decent despite the rough UE3 technicalities.

_____________

There's an annoying consolish FOV too, thankfully it's possible to manually edit it to whichever values you want: Documents/My games/bulletstorm/StormGame/config -> StormCamera.ini (not a typo, they really used the same path as Bulletstorm xD)

bFixedVerticalFOV=false (default is true)
DefaultCameraFOV=
TargetingFOV=

Like Ixi said, it doesn't excel at anything in particular, but the narrative is interesting enough to keep you playing.

I'm 4 hours in and based on what I've learned so far I'm guessing this is essentially

Not bad.

It gave me some Condemned: Criminal Origins vibes from the launch trailer.

Note to anyone that hasn't played Condemned, you are a fag.

Just beat it.

This game was pretty fucking solid. Yeah, the combat is lame but could be avoided for the most part. Only near the ending they throw loads of bad guys at you and you are pretty much forced to shoot your way out.

The graphics are "okay", nothing fancy.

The storytelling, voice acting and sound are 10/10 though. The story gripped me from the start and every time you think it's over, it's not.
