FF6 isn't called 3 anywhere but America, so it's definitely FFIII - as in the NDS/Android/iOS one. If it's coming at all that is Smile

Yeah that's the point since America is the "default" country when it comes to any "west pc release", haha.

I hope that after FF3 the rest of FF saga up to 6 will follow. Well, except FF4, I couldn't care less about that weird child of the series (along with x-2)

Wait.. what? FF4 the "weird child of the series"? Are you thinking of the right game, bud? FFIV is long considered one of the greatest in the series, it's beloved by pretty much any classic Square fan Very Happy As for FF6, Squaresoft screwed the world with JP only releases, but at least since the SNES cart it has been named correctly on all platforms - like the PS1/GBA/Mobile releases.

It would be great to get the saga out on PC though, I never understood why Square didn't bother Sad These games were ported to mobile phones ffs :\

Oh man, SE really showed how to do a remaster when they did FFIV:TCC. That sprite work was orgasmic! So Much Win I was actually kind of grimmed out when they ported the NDS version to iOS rather than the PSP one :\

But yeah, wish they did more work like that on their other remasters because that one was top notch Very Happy

@MORPHINEUS

The PSP.. now there's a machine that got some great games. Expensive and with far too many hardware revisions, not to mention the *massive* piracy rate, but still.. I've loved my several PSPs and they had some cracking titles.

@JackQ

I'd be happy with that! If SE really are keen to bring more FF titles to PC, I'd double-dip. Hopefully III-VI come out, sell well, then we can have the original two (perhaps an upsample of Dawn of Souls compilation?) and hell, maybe IX as well? X/X-2HD? Dare we say... XII and XIII? This could be great for Square, they already know there's a demand for the classic games and their newest ones are made on PC-friendly engines like Crystal Tools and Luminous.

Maybe he's thinking of FFII with the US naming conventions screwing everything up, getting confused with FFIV and the real FFII. Now that's an opinion I can get behind wholeheartedly.. FFII was terrible, absolutely terrible, with the very worst levelling/progression system I've ever seen in a jRPG.

"Say, you're getting hit quite a bit aren't you? Let's give you some more DEF"
"You're taking a lot of damage, time to up your HP"
"Whoa! You sure like casting spells! Have some more MP!"

>_< It works fine for Elder Scrolls, not so much in a typical jRPG.

Yup, Crystal Tools was originally a PC engine and SE have said quite a few times that FFXIII was running on PC during development. It's shit like this that irritates the hell out of me .. they had to port TO consoles and decided AGAINST a PC release because... security? Stupid, pointless, counter-productive horseshit. Publishers need to stop letting piracy/DRM influence platform choices - your games WILL be pirated. Period. No fucking around, no ifs or buts, it's GOING to be pirated. So rather than spiting the world because of the actions of a few, just roll with the punches and try to make as much money as possible from as many platforms as possible.

Though this is Square-Enix we're talking about, the company famous for its allergy and aversion to making money >_>

FFXIII was one of, if not the, worst in the series.. (personally I rate XI/XII lower since one was an MMO and the other desperately wanted to be an MMO) but it was still fairly enjoyable as long as you could stomach the 10 hour tutorial and 15 hour linearity. Good story, nice visuals, decent music, VERY challenging but what was less palatable was the terrible aliasing and the shockingly bad framerate in parts, so imagine how it would have been to play at 1080 with SSAA and getting 60fps? I guess we know the *real* reason why it didn't come to PC... who'd buy the 720p20/0xAA version then? Cool Face

You know what a true FF Fan is like me ? Playing FF7 and after countless hundreds of hours you cant await the FF8 rls in Europe, cause it took 6 months later in place as the Jap version. Then you go out and buy the freaking Jap version for your PS1 and play through it with absolutly no knowledge of japanese language !!!

Beat that Razz (i was 16 at the time)

Ofc i bought the German version aswell after that so i could finally understand the whole story and get all the side stuff Smile

My Favs are:
1.) FF6/FF7
2.) FF10
3.) FF9
4.) FF8 (was way to grey the most time, but i loved Triple Triad Razz)

And yeah, FF11/12 i have never touched because of the MMO aspects. I prefer the old Round based singleplayer more in the Final Fantasy series. Havent touched FF13 aswell because i dont have a console. Also skipped those sidekicks aka X-2 cause it was too arcadish.

Couldn't agree more about piracy concerns being overblown by Saqure Enix,they didn't achieved nothing,Consoles being pirated already and PC version WILL be out in one way or another in the next years,Official PC version of their games at least they will make money of it.

I just want to say, for whatever reason FFX is my all time favourite - I don't really know why.. Tidus was possibly the most annoying lead character in all of human history, Yuna was... typically Japanese... sickly cute, with a serious demeanour, eventually developing a confident resolve. Honestly, you could probably see her in Hentai exactly as she was portrayed in the game Laughing

The story tho... that was damned clever, and even the ending was odd but acceptable.

If only the HORRIFIC X-2 never existed... or at least used the same combat system. I mean really, Dressspheres? Really? SE spent time and effort in thinking of ways to improve things, and the best they could come up with was dress-up?

FFX is prob my fav too, but its always hard to choose, either 6,7 or 10 though.

I never had a problem with tidus, as much as i like cloud and squall i think they suffered for having little personality

Auron was superb tho, especially the excellent (if eventually predictable) twist near the end.

And Might I just say that the boss fight with Yunalesca was totally superb - especially the first time with no help from spoilers or anything... took me a while to figure out the strategy, but was MOST satisfying when she finally went down.

*ponders*

Not like that ffs.

FF4 absolutely mediocre with absolutely nonsensical story and dull characters compare to other games in series (FF5, 6, 7). Dunno by whom it is "long considered", I haven't seen any official statements with a stamp on this aspect.

As much as I love FF6 with all my heart and want to place it under #1 i simply can't. I won't be original here:

1. FF7
2. FF9
3. FF6
4. FF8/FF12
5. the rest

Yes, I loved FF12 much more than any other game since FF9. FF10 was kinda weird. Okay, but weird. FFX-2 was just a circus with clowns. FF11 was online so it is off the radar. FF12 was really bad in aspects of the story and character development, but it had FANTASTIC art/visual style and environment design, good character design, FANTASTIC gameplay and battlesystem and nice voiceover. For me, its positive aspects easily won over the negative ones. I could ignore some bad characters (although, there were good ones, like Fran - oh Fran <3) and story, having such fun with gameplay and exploration.

I liked FF5 a lot to, but ehh..

FFIV is considered by a great many people to be one of the best and calling it "mediocre" with a "nonsensical story" is just blatant trolling IMO. You may not like it and that's fine, I don't consider it in my top5 either, but stating that it's "absolutely mediocre" and "weird child of the family" is just ridiculous. But hey, like you said; opinions/assholes.

Quote:

In video game circles, there is a general concensus upon which games can be considered classics. Classics broke the barrier into newer generations of games. In 1992, Square released Final Fantasy IV, the game considered by the vast majority of RPGamers the classic RPG.

I can safely say that any RPGamer who has never played Final Fantasy IV does not deserve the title "RPGamer." Even though the game is not visually pleasing, the game just has to be played to experience classic RPG. It is quite short compared to more modern games (25-35 hours), but those hours will contain some of the best RPG experiences ever conceived.

I especially like this one, it's fun! Give it a read - and there even some fun citations so you can get your Official Stamp® on!

Major reviewers have called Final Fantasy IV one of the greatest video games of all time, noting that it pioneered many now common console role-playing game features, including "the whole concept of dramatic storytelling in an RPG." Reviewers have praised the game for its graphics, gameplay and score, and have noted that Final Fantasy IV was one of the first role-playing games to feature a complex, involving plot. Upon release in 1991, Nintendo Power proclaimed it set a "new standard of excellence" for role-playing games. In addition, GamePro rated it a perfect 5 out of 5 score in its March 1992 issue. Dragon reviewer Sandy Petersen gave it an "Excellent" rating, praising the music, difficulty, and story, noting that, in a departure from most RPGs where the party always "sticks together through thick and thin," the characters in this game instead have their own motives and often separate from the group, with one that "even betrays" them. He noted that it is like "following the storyline of a fantasy novel," comparing it to The Lord of the Rings as well as Man in the Iron Mask, and that because "the characters often spoke up for themselves," he "got much more attached" to the party "than in any other computer game."

Nintendo Power would later place it ninth and twenty-eighth in the "100 Greatest Nintendo Games" lists of issues 100 and 200, respectively. In 2005, IGN ranked it at #26 on its list of greatest games of all time; the highest rated Final Fantasy title on the list at the time, although in 2007, it was ranked at #55, behind Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Tactics. Famitsu released a reader poll in 2006 ranking it as the sixth best game ever made. However, the game's original release was heavily criticized for the poor quality of its English-language translation.

Final Fantasy Collection sold over 400,000 copies in 1999, making it the 31st best selling release of that year in Japan.Weekly Famitsu gave it a 54 out of 60 points, scored by a panel of six reviewers. The Game Boy Advance version, Final Fantasy IV Advance, was met with praise from reviewers, although a few noted the game's graphics do not hold up well to current games, especially when compared to Final Fantasy VI. Reviewers noted that some fans may still nitpick certain errors in the new translation. The Nintendo DS version of the game was praised for its visuals, gameplay changes and new cutscenes. It was a nominee for Best RPG on the Nintendo DS in IGN's 2008 video game awards.

"Absolutely mediocre"
"Absolutely nonsensical story"
"Dunno by whom it is "long considered", I haven't seen any official statements with a stamp on this aspect. "

@Interinactive

I always find it hard to pick the top three, since I keep going back to replay them and realising how much I enjoyed .. but usually it would go;

FFVIII
FFVI
FFX
FFVII
FFIX

I think that the world of FF8 is presented better than any of the other 3D FF games. In that respect it's basically the 3D equivalent to 6. Also, the music is great, and the character designs are visually a step above any other FF.

I'd personally rank them:

FF6
FF8
FFX/7
(big gap)
FF9
FF4

And way at the bottom, covered in sewage, you'll find FF12 and 13. I'm actually not sure which I hate more, actually.

After 10 is where my love declines rapidly for the franchise :/

I always rank 7 highest because for me it the time it got released in. It was so different and was ahead of the time. So yeah I usually resort to playing that one the most. VIII is the one that made me skip school for 3 weeks after it's release... so you can fairly say that one I like a lot as well. I rate 6 highly as well but usually gets lost in my blinded love of 7 Laughing

That being said I really like most of them up till 10, bit like my beloved phantasy star series Smile Give me a great story, music and personalities and I couldn't give a rats ass about graphics. Smile
