Some 6mb data.002 file downloaded, unsure what it does.
(You could probably run update.exe in the game folder as well and get patches that way, GoG version at least shouldn't be protected.)

File is only 160 Kb when packed.

Yes the original should be 1.0, I find it strange that the update didn't affect the game exe but maybe a exe update wasn't needed.
(Only fixes to some of the data files maybe.)

I watched some Lets Plays from the last month and read some opinions in the forums. And it seems to be much better than in the beginning at least

They released an unfinished game, and I think we are like 15 patches in about now.

Just wait for AoW3. (The iso demo updates fine tho)

Cognet release seems unprotected. I'm having to launch the update.exe multiple times to get all the patches though (seems to download them in sequential order). Hopefully it all works!

......that would bother me, if I were on a console or gave a shit about trading cards to begin with.

On a side note, the patcher that came with the Cognet release (apparently the GOG version) is fucking AWFUL. Its literally been stuck at 3 bars progress when updating from 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 for like 15 minutes now - can't tell if its stuck or it's just parsing through the 1.6 gig main file so slowly. Confused

edit: the update seems stuck at three bars here too. No disk or CPU activity, so I don't know what's going on.

I did two things (not sure which of these fixed it or if it was both), but got mine working - try this out, maybe it'll help...

I whitelisted the game directory in my AV as well as patched the game through the launcher (when you click Play it'll tell you the game is outdated and ask if you'd like to patch, then it'll launch the updater for you).

Games' actually pretty damn good, if a bit lacking in VO.

Tried that Cognito release, but updater got stuck after 2 or 3 patches it seems.
Then tried the GERMAN-GENESIS release it that worked without problems. Because the patch is actually downloaded during install.
German translation is also pretty good. Thought it would be some kind of Russian->German via Google Translate.
Game seems to be nice too. But in the end i'm happy i didn't buy it. Because you need much time for those kind of games, and i still need to finish many games first Surprised

Damn I suck with the commander type hero, probably using him wrong. A melee type hero in such a game doesn't seem to work for me. Any advice whether to go for scout or mage?
This game is deeeeeeeeep, good effort for a budget title.

I started with a Ranger, and he seems to do nice damage while still standing in the back.

Are you playing the campaign? if so I would recommend you to skip the commander/mage and go for the warrior/scout instead ( as first hero)

The commander is only good if you have access to high level units and if you only have tier 1 or 2 buildings there is little point to use him.
The mage is also kinda in the same spot as the commander, without access to higher level spell buildings you are stuck with weak magics and can't fully take advantage of your high level spell slots.

Scout is a perfect first pick if you don't wanna go the warrior route. Warrior has the advantage of being able to solo kill a lot of stuff as soon as he gets a few level + gear while the scout almost always needs some units with him.

However the scout has the advantage of being much more versatile and he can both move faster and explore faster than the warrior.

Ya its scout/warrior/mage/commander for me. With Scout being the primary. Mage and Commander shines late in the game (I just play skirmish tho).

I think the start of this game is good fun, but the progress with units and spells are lackluster and battles are very easy once you realise the AI is just in full on berserker mode Sad

Stay clear of battles where you will lose units, you need units with some nice medals (thats how second tier units seldom are much better than first tier), so be wary of harpys and mages.

The rest is just sit back and let the enemy come to while you use the advantage of the terrain to make a funnel - while the melee units are moving in,
you just shoot up everything getting close with the Scout (he is quickly skilled so he can shoot twice with a range of the entire battlefield).
Upgrade at your leisure in the town (after getting a basic unit type in place like the beserker or that guardsman type I just forgot the name of) and get some life spells with healing.

You can get a bonus unit from some of the territories (like Dwarfs or Goblins etc) by doing some things for them (with the Goblins its sacking some other territories untill you reach enough gold. The you can recruit them at your base, but again nothing beats the beserker really.

Disclaimer: I havent played this since may, so patches can have changed some things of course.

I've played for a couple of hours, it's not for me I think. It's quite deep and there are some really nice elements, but it's not engaging for some reason. The AI doesn't seem to be very smart (I only tried it at competent though) and presentation isn't very impressive (yes I know it's a budget title). It's not good if I can completely trick the AI after just a couple of hours.
I'll come to it later probably, but I switched to Sins of a Solar Empire for now.
