I was curious as hell and installed the game yesterday night, I was particularly bored (yet aroused by the visceral art-style) so I ended up finishing it in practically one sitting. It lasted a couple of hours (ish, perhaps something more), with only four chapters in total with...an "ending" that wrapped it up as quickly as possible, zero fucks given. There isn't much to say really, the game is the very definition of utterly wasted potential, it's such a weird beast.
I was expecting to find a shooter, but the game decided to be a walking simulator with some pea shooting here and there instead, in hindsight not the wisest decision. The adventure-fps hybrid with three elemental guns to use and solve puzzles actually could have worked well if supported by a level design with a minimum amount of depth, enemies that don't repeat themselves, AI patterns that aren't broken and clever puzzles instead of the 'push the button to open the portal and proceed to the linear path' routine, but alas.
It really is a shame, because as already mentioned, the visuals themselves are absolutely glorious...and that's pretty much the only good thing about the game. 9/10 for the aesthetics and 4/10 for all the rest. Not to mention the bugs, roughness, insane framerate drops, repetitive music, you name it. Patches in this case can only do so much, since there isn't a solid gameplay structure behind the visuals and not having a story doesn't help either.
I completed it yesterday too:
Spoiler:
At least I think so The bitch stuck in some massive growth-thingy where you first have to shoot a green something, then two tentacles on each side. You see the obvious pattern; that its all about damage(green), fire(yellow/orange) and lightning(blue) to kill her. After that I got a cut scene. Now she just screams... no idea how to get the credits, or if there is one more thing to do.
granted ive only just started, but the presentation of this seems woeful. i read comment about the intro cinematics voice over, but they just dont do its justice. its clearly read by a man who doesnt understand what hes saying. His emphasis is often on the wrong word, with weird pauses and breaks, i found it hard to follow what was being said while watching the video to the point where i have no fucking idea what my purpose is in this game beyond 'find the bad thing and.. kill it' i assume...
also it seemed a bit weird the game started me off with that "TOTES NEXTGEN THING" of making your vision as if its through dirty goggles or something.. but then instantly thought better of it, and removed the effect as soon as i had control.
or maybe the devs didnt know how to program it in to the actual game or something
so far my favourite bit was the installer. I havent heard the prodigy in a while.
also.. is this seriously ALL i get for my graphics settings?
I think janitors from People Can Fly, Epic Games, Flying Wild Hog, Platige Image, CreativeForge, Techland and CD Project RED went out drinking together, and after a few drinks decided that mopping the floors competent developers walk on qualifies them to develop games, and the result is this pile of shit.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty
Well I finished also...ZZZzzzz-fest !! Disappointment all around. Graphics good. Wondering what the fuck was going on was ok. It kinda' made me finish it. Other then that...zero interest. Uninstall and delete. Must of been the "B" team. The guys who look over the shoulders of the real devs thinking I can make that! haha
i get the feeling like this is the kind of game kids would make. its babys first shooter. You know, you create a sweet ass level, and then just kinda put enemies in it.. you know, because games should have enemies. just plonk em down every now and then. then throw in some occasional "weird shit". you know, the stuff you throw in to make the player go 'oooooh, thats some weird shit'.. you know.. because weird shit, yo. just throw in some door triggers that you have to find in the area, and then done.
This is exactly the kinda shit i did when i tinkered around making game levels in the past, thats exactly what this game feels like. make a cool level, and then 'fill it with stuff'.
Indeed, it reminded me of the parody 'modern gaming' level in The Magic Circle, where the game gives you a simplified editor and you have to repeatedly fill a corridor with uber-basic and extremely repetitive scripts and AI grunts (with zero awareness) in order to reach the long awaited "victory".

Haha yeah, the last level is especially buggy, you practically did the 99,9% of the game. After the (bad) cutscene you can see the door behind the lady opening, you head there, walk for a few meters and reach a cliff-like spot. There the last cutscene gets triggered, with the character that raises his arms with hundreds of people staring at him from down under, while the big tower collapses. That's it. No explanation, no backstories at all, just that
I JUST FINISHED THE GAME AND ALL IM LEFT WITH NOW IS SEETHING ANGER.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS ANYTHING I JUST PLAYED.
i am starting to think that the game is not that bad after all according to your comments, if you think of it so much after you finished it and it makes you feel different kinds of feelings so maybe there is something here after all
As I've said, and others have said too,the game is beautiful, and has a great atmosphere, which is why I finished it (also because it's stupidly easy and hand-holdy). I get angry about things that have so much wasted potential, sadly
i understood the general idea but despite the cons of the game (wasted potential etc), you and some other comments made me think again about downloading and installing the game, i would like to see the graphic and the atmosphere.
Well hopefully the game "AGONY" will be a little more then just wandering around wondering what the fuck is going on. This is what it is like to take mushrooms and then being dump off in the dark in some gross forest with only you and your messed up chemical reaction brain!!
Agony is the other game I'm super looking forward to... Perhaps I should adjust my expectations
That said, between (potential-wise) this games setting, and the one agony presents.. I'd find inner chains world faarrrr more fascinating.. Agony is clearly disturbing as shit, but the world presented in this game is one I wish I knew so much more about.
There's always the potential problem afflicting this particular sub-genre (if we can call it that way) where developers often tend to focus on superficial oomphy aspects that catch the eye to make up for the cheapness of the level design.
In the end it's the rewarding exploration and solid narrative structure that turn a flabby doomy walking simulator into an immersive first person adventure/experience, and alas not many games nail that. I wish I could neuralyze myself and play both SOMA and Alien Isolation again with a virgin brain

Of course, that is not the end of updates. Currently, we are working on even better optimization for the whole game, more bug fixing, more gameplay improvements and an option to change the key bindings!
I'm actually not kidding, the first 10 or 20 minutes really blew me away with its atmosphere and art design (if it could have held that atmosphere and built on it, it could have been goty level stuff), but the more I played all the problems became so apparent and utterly ruined the experience. It's like a really sugary dessert. First few mouthfuls are amazing, but if you try and finish it, you'll just end up with a case of uncontrollable shits
