Is it certain that the guys at Crytek knew what they were getting into? I mean, Amazon could just hid their 'all will be free' clauses deep in the contract, leaving Crytek thinking they'll be selling the engine that would then only be used for Amazons own projects.
Not sure if i understand your sentence correct.
But Lumberyard is just a fork of the Cryengine. Amazon is free do with it what they want - at least if the project stays within Amazon Web Services i guess.

They got paid well so surely they knew why they are getting paid well.
Anyway CryEngine is now free too (pay what you want starting from $0 but you need to buy a membership for support).

First screenshots for SpeedTree 8 in Amazon’s Lumberyard Engine, to be demoed at this year’s GDC
Quote:
IDV has announced that SpeedTree 8, two years in development and packed with new graphical and intuitive time-saving features, will debut at GDC2017 in its initial release form: the new SpeedTree for Lumberyard. SpeedTree for Amazon’s Lumberyard will be available in the second quarter of 2017, and will add support for other engines later on. In order to celebrate this announcement, IDV released some new beautiful screenshots for SpeedTree 8 that can be viewed below.

It's not so bad, but the game definitely needs more polish. It's also missing some key features like chat/voip and ranked. The devs also cut some corners when it comes to production value.
And for the reviews, just look at them lol, it's people who played 1 round, got owned by "insert random class here" and then write a negative review about how bad the game is ^^.
It lacks modes/maps, yes.
It lacks means of communication, abso-freaking-yes.
But fighting is fun. But you need to learn your classes first. They are all wildly different, so it's really all about knowing how to play and your strength and weaknesses.
Is it a great game now? No, because of the 2 points above.
Can it be? Yes, if they add more maps and modes and keep adding new and interesting classes over time, even more so.
Obvious things are obvious: this is my opinion. If you like the game, good for you!
I have 2-3 hours on record - I won 3/3 of my first games of Alpha Hunters, have 6-7 wins (won almost all), and as it turned out, I played one of the weakest characters.
So when I say it is utter shit, I mean I tried it, gave it a decent shot, even won multiple games, but that rush you feel, when you win - or do well on a good BR? Yeah ... none of that here.
Uninspired shit.
It tried to be everything to everyone. Ended up being nothing.
To name a few problems:
- combat is simply shit. Enemies are bullet sponges (so are you). Movement is very slow, thus aiming is very easy. The only skill you need is focus firing with your teammate. There is no high skill ceiling they claimed, it is easy.
- the feel of the game is weak. No weight to anything
- PVE is basically dummies, no point to it
- map is uninspired
- characters: I really don't care about these in games, but this is zome Z level copy-paste of Overwatch. Blizzard is laughing their ass off.
And then the technical details. The game runs bad, and looks like 2012 at best. I can hold 120+fps in Warzone on 1440p ultrawide maxed out, but get sub 100 here. It is a joke. But even at high FPS it feels very choppy.
And no FOV slider on PC in 2020. You are locked in at 45 VFOV.
I would say there's a notable skill ceiling. This is not a shooter, the combat plays more like an arena brawler. All heroes have unique abilities that work in synergy. You need to use your hero's strengths and constantly adapt to the fight. There are combos, environmental dangers and other variables. The feedback isn't that great on all the abilities, but that's another discussion. The PvE is similar to that of MOBAs.
Not having an FOV slider is a big issue. But the game has plenty of these. I mean in 2020, if you don't find enough players for a match, the game pretty much boots again.
I don't have performance issues, but I noticed some problems with textures streaming. The graphics are alright.
The game feels rushed in many aspects and this is probably the reason they didn't do much in terms of marketing.
You both have valid points. And if this game would cost even 1$, I'd say to stay away from it.
But since it is free, meh, try it.
Me for example, don't give a fuck about BR, so I haven't even played that mode yet and don't see a reason to.
But I like 4v4 and 8v8 modes (generally speaking in shooters), so those are right down my alley.
And yes, players are spongy they should change that a bit. Or at least make weapons do proper damage, depending on what they are.
I also agree, that the "PVE" part is lackluster. They should make it more like in Dota etc. i.e. make somewhat intelligent groups of AI mobs with different difficulties, which give you a little fight at least (or more).
FOV is probably the biggest issue with the game right now. The view is very narrow and that does make it a bit nauseating at times (or claustrophic).
But with all that being said, the game for me still has a chance to be something great/fun IF the devs listen to the players and change/add the stuff I've and others mentioned.
If they don't, it will fail and burn and nobody will even remember it a year from now
