One good thing at the moment if you sub is the 12x XP was brought back until the next expansion comes out. With that you can completely ignore any side-quest grinding and just play the class stories. Not bad value if you sub for a month or two and run through a few classes.

As Bob said on the previous page, late October. So another 3 months of 12x XP available. I think there was some bundle on Amazon that had 2 months of sub, the last expansion (Shadow of Revan), and a bunch of Cartel coins for a good price.

I played SWTOR at release back then, but stopped after the free month.
I think it was because of the rather uninspiring combat and some other gameplay things.
Did anything important regarding the gameplay change since release? I mean, is it still mostly doing quests, pvp or crafting and that was it? Or is there something new like housing?
Didn't follow the games updates so much :O
And if anyone here plays it, how active would say is the game in regards of population?

There are Strongholds, which are the TOR housing system. It uses instanced premade locations with "hooks" that you can place various decorations on to customise to your liking. There are currently 4 available, Coruscant (Republic capital), Dromund Kaas (Empire capital), Nar Shaddaa, and Tatooine. There's also a 5th one on Yavin 4 coming in the next patch on Tuesday next week I think, assuming it doesn't get delayed.
Gameplay is much the same as launch, although they did release a space PVP addon called Galactic Starfighter.
Population depends on which server you are on. They recently offered heavily discounted server transfers, presumably to try and consolidate the population, so a lot of the less populated servers have even less people now. I think the two biggest US PVE servers are Harbinger (west coast) and Jedi Covenant (east coast). Not sure about PVP, although I think it's Bastion on the west coast. I have no idea about the EU servers.

Huge Game Update 4.0 out today for the new exp Knights of the Fallen Empire which unlocks on the 27th. Early access starts today for folks who were subscribers since August of this year.

Did they dumb this game down further? Am I reading correct there is only one stat now. There is level sync now though for areas right and pvp? Maybe that alone will save it.

I'll be logging in shortly to see. Looks like only a few things got dumbed down while others expanded.
So, Strength, Willpower, Cunning, and Aim are now "Mastery" which is your character's primary stat anyway. I guess this allows for more appearance customization as far as armor/loot goes. This could be a good thing.
Other stupid shit got combined like Surge and Critical are now one. Never understood why 2 separate stats control crit chance and damage.... ffs
The Min/Maxers are probably going to be pissed about it because now they'll have to re parse dps again to show off their epeen.
Also, companion crafting is based on your influence for the bonuses. NO MORE useless bonuses in crew skills.
Datacrons are legacy bound now. You don't have to search for them with every character.

That's good for grouping with people of different levels (like say helping out someone starting a new character by bringing along your max level character), but it should have been optional, not mandatory. Now regardless of what level you are, you'll scale down to the max level of the planet, which is fucking stupid if you just want to go there to get a Datacron or something. It will be an endless slog of wading through trash mobs everywhere you go.

The last time I actually played this was just around rise of the hut cartel...
my 1 toon is actually on Harbinger he's level 50.. the max at the time I stopped playing.
so best method to get up to date and access to the new max level and
content is what...
subscribe for a month?, buy shadows of revan? or buy the new knights of the fallen empire expansion?
tried to login to see where my toon was and bam... update time
... man is it taking forever doing all the updates that have happen in the last 2 years

Subscribe for two months (~22 eur), you will have the access to all expansion packs (including the newest), just enough time to go through allnew content.

They weren't even good at release.
But for me they still were more than okay, thanks to the art.

They've actually gotten worse. Draw distance took the worst hit. There used to be a slider for everything in the options, not there's nothing. And ini tweaks don't help one bit.

There were a bunch of server merges. Your character was likely moved somewhere else but shouldn't have been deleted. Although you will probably need to rename it.

jeez , remember PVP on that lvl 50 ice planet. You could not fight with more than 15 ppl or otherwise your FPS would nosedive to 10.

I would say give it a try.
I played through the story missions some months ago mostly solo, and really enjoyed it.
The previous DLC "Knights of the Fallen Empire" is also said to be very good in regards of story missions.

You basically play it as a single player game these days. Of course they've completely neglected all the multiplayer aspects for over a year, so there's not a lot of choice anyway.
You can play all the content up to level 50 completely free, and that's the best story stuff anyway, the class stories. If you enjoy it, you could subscribe for a month ($15), which unlocks all the expansions (ROTHC, SOR, KOTFE), gain access to level 65 characters (including a slot for a new char starting at level 60), and you'll be boosted from F2P to Preferred (which slightly reduces some of the restrictions) once your sub expires. If you do that, just make sure to wait a few weeks until chapter 16 of KOTFE is out. That's the final chapter, so subbing after that will unlock all of them.
Playing F2P starting off can be a little rough, with no resources and gear, so if you can find someone to show you the ropes and get you started you'll have a much smoother experience. My recommendation story-wise would be Sith Warrior, although Imperial Agent is often claimed by people to have the best story. Sith Inquisitor as a Sorcerer is loads of fun to play, combat style-wise, throwing masses of lightning around. If you prefer a pussy lightside experience, Jedi Knight is passable, although I find the story a little bland. Trooper and Bounty Hunter both have a lot of fun blowing shit up. Smuggler is a good laugh and lets you get into the pants of basically every NPC you meet (ixi would love it, but sadly no Gamorrean LIs).

I think only the class stories are worth playing, the expansions has some god awful stories and padding.
The Hutt cartel story is not terrible, but it suffers from being a MMO a lot. Lots of running around, you're basically doing what you've been doing on other planets leveling, but with slightly higher quality cutscenes.
Shadow of Revan has a terrible story they made up, trying to conclude their original fuck up with Revan in vanilla.
As for Fallen Empire, again they are trying to fix their fuck up with the Emperor during vanilla, but again imo in a terrible way.
However the latter 2 expansions has a lot less MMO problems, so much so that it is actually unfriendly for ppl trying to coop, better just solo it. It also has a lot of padding with unavoidable combat. Especially the post-release chapters for Fallen Empire.
But with all that said, the game's strength still is during interactions with your companions, and just trying role play your Star Wars character. And the latter 2 expansions does a good job at that. But they all just come with a terrible plot, premise, and villain.
