Not sure what exactly it was, but i often got Starcraftish vibes.

For examples those briefings before a mission, where you can also listen to what others characters have to say.

The three playable races are so similar to the ones in SC.

Some missions where you mostly play as a hero only.

It's the color pallet and the gameplay that isn't based on random factors anymore. The campaign itself doesn't mimic Starcraft 2 and it would have benefited from doing so. Not by copying the story (because we all know that was terrible), but by using those unique mission mechanics. The Eldar's stealth mission was cool, yet even there Relic cheaped out which is probably the biggest problem with this game. Which was the last RTS that any of you has played that didn't have special achievements for singleplayer missions?
But, for what is worth, the dialogues were extremely good up until the end and I liked the character's interaction. I just wish that level of quality was general.

Dawn of War 2 had a similar briefing style.

The concept behind Starcraft is copied from Warhammer 40k after Blizzard couldn't get the license to make a strategy game. The races aren't all that similar with the ones in Starcraft 2, they just respect their fluff (more or less).

The hero only mission is something that was introduced in Warcraft 3 and this was clearly an inspiration for DoW III which is visible in its heroes focused multiplayer.

I think it was Warcraft that was based on Warhammer Fantasy, but they couldn't get the license? Scratch Head

Or that, to be honest I can't remember and I was too lazy to google it. But Starcraft races are clearly inspired by some of the Warhammer 40k races.

Would be funny if they ripped GW twice. Laughing But then, almost all modern "fantasy" is ripping heavily from Tolkien's concepts.

I'm almost done with the campaign in hard (and without doctrines, I guess that makes it harder).

It's not really hard, just longer.

Also, the game feels more like an action RPG "with minions", than an RTS.

Sin17 is probably the best person to give an opinion. I have only played two missions, Gay Marines which was ok I guess and Orkz which was boring as f.
It's weird game, if you played previous versions you will miss stuff like retreat button or morale. The battles are faster and I usually don't really get to use units's skills (also tabbing between units works weird), the minimap is crap and I tend to click on it when I try to select a unit in lower right corner which is pissing me off.
The path finding is borked and heroes can start dancing trying to get somewhere or between units.
Overall if you wished for a better DoW game - forget it. If you like your run of the mill RTS you might want to see it. It's better than most of the crap that comes out as RTS but by far the worst game by Relic.

I'm going to give you my advice as someone who spent close to 100 hours in this game (mostly multiplayer) and plans to spend more after today's update. If you are a 40k fan or you like the universe, take the game as it is, there are fewer 40k games out there then they should be and many of them are pretty low budget/quality, this one isn't.
If you are a long time DoW (I or/and II) player, DoW III is probably a disappointment, but it isn't a terrible game. And if you are a competitive player you'll find there is plenty of entertainment value in the multiplayer (as long as the playerbase still holds).
Relic is committed to repair some things. On the latest stream it was mentioned (more or less) that any paid content was put on hold to focus on the feedback from the community. It started with the Annihilation mode and turrets, there's probably more to come.
I'm not defending the game, some of its parts are really good, some went way to farm from the original formula/tabletop or are just terrible by design. But Relic games have always been more about an intriguingly weird multiplayer and you'll get that here for sure. Mr. Green

Sell it now, buy it again on a sale later down the line when Relic did some work on it.

Yeah 3 was an absolute fack up! Shocking and the lack of DLCs is gonna nail that coffin shut. Embarassed They have themselves to blame since they never listened to the players/fans/gamers and just released a mind-less dumbed-down RTS. Just let it die...

Sounds like they're blaming sales more than themselves and then SEGA probably decided to end support since the game tanked really hard with how Relic or someone in charge decided the formula needed to be revamped into whatever this is.

Course I doubt Relic would ever actually put blame on their publisher but it isn't looking good for them now as a result and if the next game is going to be UWP only that's not going to do well either for PC at least.

Relic is a subsidiary of SEGA, they can't complain. For what is worth, DOW3 multiplayer was ok, but not as awesome as the one in DOW2.

Oh I see, yeah they wouldn't be pointing at SEGA then and I'm guessing these decisions are mostly from their side going by trends and analytical data rather than direct player feedback though they had some of it from the beta I'm guessing but at that point it's mostly balance tweaks and maybe bug fixing.

Sounds like they did get a few patches out at least but sales likely started poor and then dropped further at which point SEGA likely had plans to pull further support so any initial plans were scaled back and then put on hold.

Much like many other game projects I'm assuming we might never have the full details and NDA's can be active for a very long time too. Would make for a fascinating insight into games development I'm thinking with how these decisions are made and well there's probably enough material to fill several books or videos just for executive meddling with entire games or even game franchises to individual employees.

Though the devs likely have some understanding of that some of these requests from above likely won't go down too well with the existing player base though occasionally it's the other way around too. Smile

EDIT: In this case though I think it's well established that SEGA doesn't take chances, cancellations, focus on DLC and a steady stream of sequels.

But I guess it's not too different from other larger video game companies in that regard really.

I don't like how many strong single player games suddenly get hit by the idea of C&C4 "let's get multiplayer oriented, competative and esport is de vey!" and then fail miserably
oh noes, where did we go wrong?

fucking learn from history, instead of repeating it

There's that too I guess, Renegade didn't work out at all for either Westwood or EA but EA still tried again with Tiberium though it wasn't even released and ended in development hell before being cancelled.

At least Sega hasn't gone that far yet with Relic. Smile
They did make Warhammer 40K: Space Marine but as a spin-off game unrelated to Dawn of War and without trying to mix multiple game genres.
(Though I don't think it did well enough to receive a sequel.)

Space Marine deviation happened when Relic still belonged to the deceased THQ (not to be mistaken with today's THQ). Needless to say, the game kind of failed to meet the expected sales.

Relic was bought by the original THQ in the early 2000's and aquired by Sega when THQ went down, along with the CoH and DOW IP's.

THQ went down because they took unnecessary risks. The name was aquired by Nordic Games and used as THQ Nordic in our days.

While i wasn't a fan of DoW 2, i won't say that the game didn't have its own appeal. But DoW 3...wow...just no.
