Tomb Raider 1 has been ported to Windows, no need for DOSBox anymore!
More correctly, the superior (better than 3DFX and close to PowerVR quality) Ati version which was the only Windows port of the game but needed an ancient Ati card to run has been wrapped to regular OpenGL.
The Ati version was a Windows port because it was made almost 2 years after the release of the software rendered version and a year after the release of the 3DFX version.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll see if I can get all the required ingredients (HQ FMV, PSX music, etc) and this to play it semi-modern!

The question is, why would you play the original game nowadays, when there is the Anniversary edition with better graphics available?
Anniversary plays a bit differently because of the modernized levels and controls. The original plays more like a puzzle game where you are thinking the platforming in blocks.
tl;dr there is merit to playing the original as they are not playing exactly the same.
edit tank controls are my life, never had a problem with them in any game, the only problem in the TR classic games is that you can't control the camera with the right stick/mouse/whatever which sucks.

is there any comparision available of 3dfx vs ati version? 3dfx works fine afaik with a wrapper and dosbox
"Superior" probably as in back in the day on real hardware. Both wrapped today probably shouldn't have serious differences as they would be quite sharp and smooth.
The games that really are better [on PowerVR] than 3DFX is Mechwarrior 2 and Tomb Raider. You can check out my comparison video on Mechwarrior 2, but for Tomb Raider you just have to take my word for it (though the ATI Rage version is very close actually!).

Yes, the Tomb Raider works very well on the Rage Pro cards. There are some graphical glitches (due to drivers), but the advantages are as follows:
1. It is a Windows port, meaning you can use gamepads with USB and way more buttons natively! (without using key to button conversions and running in a WinDOSBox which creates input lag)
2. On the ATI Rage Pro you can run in 800x600 in 30 FPS which is stable in all situations. PowerVR can fluctuate in large areas or if much is going on at the same time.
3. Sharp picture, better than on 3DFX and Rendition.

here is what it looks like, just started playing. there is widescreen with the patch, but it says it's glitchy, so i'm playing at closest to native res pillarboxed.
there are more options, like draw distances in the ini files.
also had no issue getting a gamepad to work with joy2key, as for some reason, I cannot remap controls in game at all. stuck at default and can't move to custom with any keypress.
just make sure to set to scancode emulation in joytokey.
Ok so I got it working, but I can't map the controls.

That's disabled for now, due to bugs. I hope it will be fixed someday, only time will tell.

Me gusta!
This is how the game looks like with the old method:
Spoiler:
I believe the differences are minimal for the obvious reasons, but I'm gonna switch to the new one.
It's a shame that widescreen isn't supported here, it really is a godsend in TR2,3 and 4. Maybe it will be patched in/fixed one day
gotta say, despite the arcadey combat, the exploration with 0 hand holding, the most minimalistic hud, and awesome encounters make it still playable to this day. the tanky controls fit in with the context of the gameplay. jumps take skill, you need to move slowly and examine the surroundings. compared to ROTR, it's a pretty hardcore game.
I played the first 2 levels, it looks nice. There are some misalignments or thin black lines in the geometry that I'm not sure if they exist in the 3DFX version but they are not a deal breaker. (Back in the day when games had a different exe for each graphics card API, each exe was often bugged in different ways because they were quick and dirty ports done months after the original release.)
I can tell the controls are snappier than the DOSBox + Glide version I have briefly tested before and that's the most interesting thing with this port.
I also found the PSX soundtrack mod but I couldn't find the HQ FMV one. Am I getting confused and what I remember existing was for a different Tomb Raider game? Anyway it's a very different experience playing with the music!
I've only played (and finished) Tomb Raider in software mode - back then I had no Internet so I had absolutely no idea there was a patch that enabled accelerated graphics. I was very surprised to later learn it had half a dozen ports to specific graphics cards APIs and the one I could have used (Glide) was actually very popular.

you never bought print magazines back in the good old days? was the only option to get patches for a long time (without wasting too much money, got easier with isdn though, 7,5kb/s yeah, but atleast a flatrate)
I did! Patches, demos, drivers, that's how I was getting them. But that was a little later. Specifically one of the first magazines I bought had the Tomb Raider III demo.

sweet. the game feels kinda empty without more audio. i have music playing first few min, then nothing. and all the other soundtracks i found required the 3dfx exe usage.
working fine after a restart. that's some crazy music lol.
Did you follow all the instructions? Copied all the files? Editing the .ini file?
In my game for example the music played during this:
