My 3 cents on other survival games...
The Long Dark is amazing. The story is boring, the main attraction is the sandbox survival mode (if you're waiting for them to finish all the chapters, no need, just jump into sandbox and safely skip the story-mode). Very little crafting is necessary, your chances are based more on how effectively you can scavenge and portion your supplies (and fend off the wildlife). Hand-crafted world, all maps are inter-connected, and the loot is completely random, you might not find a rifle in the same spot on a second try. Light-RPG elements, you can level up certain skill by using them.
The Forrest is good too, with a seemingly better story. More emphasis on building a self-sufficient base rather than the nomadic hunter-gatherer style in TLD. The world is also hand-crafted, and the tools and weapons you can loot always spawn at the same places, so there's little surprise on repeated playthroughs.
Project Zomboid is the king here. It's an isometric RPG survival game, so don't be surprised if your guy misses every single pistol-shot if he's not skilled at shooting. The only games more complex than this are the likes of Dwarf Fortress or Cataclysm-DDA. You can change a fuckton of initial settings: how the zombie virus behaves, how zombies themselves behave, loot density, amount of time since the apocalypse, which in turn determines how dilapidated houses are, if there's still water/power running, if you can find perishable foods, etc, etc. Also hand-crafted world, but it's moddable, so you can download extensions to the map.

Just finished it. Having never played early access, and not knowing much about what the game was really about I was very pleasantly surprised.
Extremely solid and well developed game mechanics are the main driving force. Exploration, crafting, base building and survival elements all play together extremely well.
That alone would make it a great game, but it is also backed by great visuals, great map design and engaging world, great soundtrack and surprisingly even a fairly decent narrative, which isn't something I even expect from this type of game.
Aside from a few very minor technical issues, it is a nearly perfect game.

I find very few things wrong with the game.
* Resources are a bit 'obvious' in terms of loads of cliffs, rocks and boulders, but only special ones can actually be 'broken' to find stuff.
* Drilling is fine, but why then can't I just drill through the bedrock and other places (obviously because the game doesn't feature destructive scenery... but it's a bit immershun breaking innit.)
* Why can't you deconstruct objects you made?

Terraforming had a tool in one of the beta versions but it was disabled after a while for performance reasons, guessing that was something with the game engine or how they used it for dynamic adding and removal of terrain bits.

| Quote: | Update 84 Released
Crushing Bugs
Since launch, we have been prototyping potential Subnautica expansions, working on Xbox One launch, and working on tidying up some of the more glaring bugs in the Steam 1.0 release.
Today we released an update that includes a bunch of that tidying up. Here's the list of changes:
Main menu button texts update correctly when switching languages
In-game menu button text colors fixed
F8 panel fully translated
Cyclops flooding leak indicators now clearly outside of the hull
Controller navigation and selection boxes fixed
Builder menu usable with swapped mouse buttons
Lifepod fabricator lighting fixed
Cyclops hatch door collider fixed
Disallow poster placement where wall lockers are disallowed
Non-localized text removed from color customization terminal
Physics bugs with ion cubes and precursor keys fixed
End-game achievements now trigger
Lost river creatures now immune to brine
Player mask now correctly lit
Can not despawn Aurora by building a base next to it anymore
Seamoth hatch animation fixed
Changing quality settings in game reminds player to restart the game
Time capsule UI simplyfied
Pathfinder tool recipe adjusted
Entering exosuit while sprinting fixed
Enjoy!
Historical Factoid
In the early days of Subnautica development, updates did not have names. They had numbers, like Update 8. We eventually switched to names, like Seamoth Update, because they were punchier.
Under the hood the named updates continued to have numbers. Update 84 reverts to the old school: A Subnautica Update with no name.

As for disabling the Power Plant, I was really curious too and found this from the Data Bank:

The power plant appears to be fully automated and - given current understanding of the mechanisms involved - uninterruptible. |

Yeah I read that too. Oh well, still a damn fine game - if with some minor issues. And still a slightly bitter aftertase with the firing issue.

Hmm. That could be a prequel about that Degasi mercenary woman from the in-game logs. There seemed to be no other survivor from the Aurora and the story about Degasi looked interesting. Or maybe at the game time as she could still be alive.

I dunno - the planet only had sustainable life in that crater and the screenshot shows snow so it might be a different planet altogether.

The tweet says 4546B so it's probably the same planet. Maybe there is another explorable part of it and the woman gone there though some portal that is either very hidden or destroyed now.

It's very possible. But, the devs kind of painted themselves in a corner with their background story - the alien canon shooting down any ships, the only liveable area being fully explorable, the story fixed around the disease, etc. I loved the game but to make an expansion and make it work with the original on the same planet .... eeeh, not sure how'd they do it. Remnants of the same alien race on another planet with a similar setting would work better.

The Arctic expansion will be a separate game mode with a different protagonist rather than Ryley Robinson, and takes place in a separate map. It will also be set in a time period after Ryley Robinson has escaped Planet 4546B. The full release date is currently planned for mid 2019. Currently all that is known is that the Arctic Biome will be a large part of the game, possibly the entire map.

I can't wait.. such a fine game - even with glaring issus and limitations, I just didn't really seem to care. Sadly, not a game I feel the need to replay though - I guess that's kinda the issue with storybased games... once you figure it all out, there's no real reason to do it all again.

I wonder how they'll design the Arctic depths and diversify the areas, it'll take some proper creativity to come up with visually striking biomes and all kinds of peculiar alternative alien flora (and them beasts!). Definitely looking forward to it as well, the game was simply

I think the ONLY thing that really irritated me about the game was the defined edge of the crater, and how Leviathans were always there waiting to kick your ass. I hope there's a few new modules and I would love to see base building become a lot more important - no idea how, but I think it was a wasted opportunity to be more integral to the game.
Still one of the best game of the last 12 months.

7h in, it's pretty decent. I thought the first 5h were great, now its starting to feel a bit slow and same-same. Not on pair with NMS unfortunately, similar feel but more "cramped" and not as many activities going on, quite linear really. Will take a break and hopefully come back to it in a few days.

You are following the story I hope? Seeking and finding the lost pods and listening to the recordings is vital in moving the story forward. And make sure you leave the water occasionally...

If it feels same-same, you're not progressing right. Best to use a guide to see what stuff you have to do next. The game is really well paced IF you know what to do next. It has some holes which require guides to help you out - like certain resources that you need to build the next big thing - which can only be found in a certain location.
I had a hard time finding the tree cove but once you know it, it's not all that hard.

yeah i got the Seaglide + radioactive suit so yes i should be able to explore a bit more. guess its time to go all the way to the Aurora. nice to hear there are 2(!) islands. unexpected.
is the base building optional or is that something you eventually just have to deal with to progress?

Base building makes life a lot easier. I had bases all over the crater. Doesn't take many resources to have a basic base with a bay to recharge and repair your vehicles.
