Crepes aren't == pancakes, they're similar but used for different purposes. Crepes are thinner, used for both dessert (filled with strawberry cream and with white powdered sugar on top and other times with some kind of seafood/meat/mushroom-sauce/scramble in the middle.

Pancakes are bigger, thicker, with anything from some fruit jam to cinnamon, apple-mash sauce etc.

And we do not call them American pancakes, they're simply Pannkakor. Crepes is a french version. American pancakes to me is flapjacks, small thick pancakes.

Then there's the one kind of pancake I HATE: pork-pancake. They put chopped up pork in the mix and make pancakes with pieces of pork in it with lingonberry jam. Ugh.

Typical Swedish pancake:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancake

every country , heck even regions inside countries, has a different definition of what is a pancake Smile

My favorite are the german style "Pfannkuchen" (literally pancake). They are thicker and are made with more eggs then for example crêpes etc.

Grandma used to make em so perfect Sad

Nordic pancakes are similar to the French crêpes.

American, Canadian and Mexican pancakes (sometimes called hotcakes, griddlecakes, or flapjacks) are pancakes that contain a raising agent such as baking powder; proportions of eggs, flour, and milk or buttermilk create a thick batter.

I'll stick to what I've been saying my whole life, thanks Smile It's easier to differentiate between the two when you're trying to explain to others. It's regional, in the UK when we have Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday to religious types) we all just say "pancakes" but the mixture is actually fundamentally the same as "crepes", even in Norway when "pancakes" are made they're fundamentally the same as "crepes", it's what we always eat when we say "pancakes" - the thin flaps that are either for sweet or savoury, though I prefer sweet... lemon juice, sugar and/or jam Drooling That is unless wifey specifically says "American style pancakes" Very Happy

Pancakes ARE thing, they just have a bigger diameter and is made in normal frying pans, not crépe pans (for the true crepe fanatics). We might as well call them waffles otherwise, the batter is essentially the same, just fried in a waffle iron. Wink

Making the batter isn't the difficult part, the difficult part is the boredom of frying all those pancakes.... :/
