If the surprise is having a TF2 character in a telltale game, then it's the lamest surprise ever imo. Very Happy

Lame surprises are one of Valve's specialties. Remember Portal 2 for the PS3?.

The complete interview: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/08/interview-gabe-on-valves-big-surprises/

The parts about the surprises:

[after being asked about the Orange Box, L4D2 etc, and how the community was surprised when they were first announced:]

Orange Box was a really interesting experiment around… I can guarantee you that people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. (Laughs) That isn’t going to stop anytime soon. I’m just laughing because people will be shocked again.

PC Gamer: By something you’re going to do soon?
Gabe Newell: Yes.

The average surprise is negative, not positive, and so if we’re going to surprise people we need to be conscious of that fact. Because we’re going to continue to surprise. We have three pretty big surprises in the next twelve months, at least.

We have three surprises. I’m talking about surprises, not the surprises themselves. But we’re going to do three things that have the potential to… that will be novel. And if we don’t make sure that people understand what we’re doing, they could easily respond in a Left 4 Dead 2 kind of way. Like, “What the hell?” right? And we just need to be good about that.

First surprise revealed: Microtransactions in TF2 as of yesterday.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/4411/
http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=4410&p=1
http://www.teamfortress.com/mannconomy/FAQ/

Basically instead of waiting for a hat (or similar items) to drop after hours of playing you can buy them from Valve. Almost none of the items give you a gameplay advantage (and those that do can still be obtained by simply playing the game), they are cosmetic and most of them can be obtained by simply playing the game (there are a few exclusive to the store, just as there are a few exclusively obtained through playing the game).

Furthermore if the item was crafted by another player, when you pay a percentage of the money will go the Valve and the rest will go to the person that crafted it and put it on sale.

Confirmation that this is the first surprise: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/30/interview-valve-on-why-theyre-selling-team-fortress-2-items-for-real-money/

Team Fortress 2’s lead designer Robin Walker offered to answer our questions before the update went up, to help clarify the thinking behind this – the first of three big surprises Valve have planned in the next twelve months.

edit They have confirmed that
1) they aren't going to start selling maps or anything like this, that will mean that you have to pay to enjoy the 100% of the game
2) they will continue to release free updates etc like they did all those years

Valve has promised "at least" three "big surprises" for gamers in the next 12 months. Half-Life 3, anyone?

Unfortunately - in typical, teasing style - it refused to be drawn on any detail of what the surprises entailed.

Speculation over a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 announcement was rife before E3 in June, but never materialised. Valve cancelled a planned press conference at the LA Expo very suddenly - which was supposed to reveal a "surprise".

Maybe that was one of the three?

"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Valve boss Gabe Newell told the latest issue of PC Gamer.

"We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."

Bring 'em on, Gabe. Bring 'em on.

Newell has also revealed that Valve is working hard on biometrics to better understand their customers - and, potentially, to bring freaky new heart-monitoring thrills to gameplay.

You can read the full, fascinating interview with Valve on its history in PC Gamer UK - which is with subscribers now and in stores tomorrow.

This could swing any which way!

Wish and suspicion: it's been so long since Episode 3 disappeared off the radar. Perhaps they dropped the episodic content and have been working on a full sequel (HL3) for the last couple of years. I did read an article 4-6 months ago where someone from Valve said they weren't really talking about episode 3 any more but that the Half-Life universe weren't left behind. We can always dream can't we? Wink

1. Half Life 3 announced
2. Half Life 3 has some cool biometric peripheral

EDIT: Just read what the first "surprise" was. I guess my expectations were a tad high.

i have played TF2 several hours today, and yes, there a lot Derps who have already bought a ton of stuff (Impatient children most likely). Sooner or later I'm gonna get everything by drop and crafting, since I can't get myself to pay great sums of money for a virtual hat!

Oh man, gaming these days is getting really ridiculous!
What's next? Pay some extra money to get access to use the mouse in a FPS game instead of playing with the keyboard or gamepad?
Pay extra to hear music in the background instead of only the soundeffects?

Older gamers get tears in their eyes when they hear this.
Young gamers seem to like this and buy extra maps, extra 'clothing', extra everything...

come on.... Sad

Thats probably only you. You have an option to buy it, you don't have to. They're only extras that wouldn't be included in the released game anyway.

And most of them CAN be obtained for free except some purely cosmetic items which are exclusive to the store, just like there are items exclusively obtained through playing.

And those few items that do affect gameplay (they aren't purely cosmetic) absolutely CAN be obtained for free.

Not to mention that they aren't even bothering to bring this feature to the PS360 versions of TF2 where I believe it's much more likely for console gamers to pay for this.

If this is Valve's idea of paid DLC I'm all for it. The added microtransactions simply mean that now Valve has a reason to continue releasing free content for another 3 years instead of announcing TF3.

If they didn't do this I doubt they would continue to be releasing content updates for much longer. It's a 3 year old game, how much more cash could they get by continuing to release content updates? At this point the majority of those that were interested in the game, have already bought it.

Likewise CS had 3 years of updates (1.0 -> 1.6) before it was abandoned in favor of the sequel, CS:S. You can't be expecting that they wouldn't eventually abandon updating TF2 after 3+ years, unless they found a way to make some extra cash.

At least I wasn't surprised by this announcement because they've been talking about it for years.

All the following links contain interviews from 2008:

http://play.tm/interview/17853/valve-software-s-doug-lombardi/2/

Quote:
Would Valve ever go micro-transactional?

If we ever get a game that fits that, we'd love to do that. I'd love to have a game that we gave away saying 'however much you want to invest in this, this is yours'.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17744

Quote:
Currently, he says, Valve is working with Nexon to experiment with CS Online under those revenue models in Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China, incorporating a microtransactions model.

"Folks will need to make microtransactions to get different items, skins, things like that," Lombardi explains.

"The world's moving in that direction," adds Lombardi. "It's tempting to say that's the future."

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/873/873607p1.html

Quote:
Looking ahead, Valve might also consider getting into different kinds of payment models than the standard blanket price for a retail box or download. According to Lombardi, Valve is looking closely at Counter-Strike Online, which just recently launched in Asia and uses a microtransaction payment model. Will we ever see Valve bring that kind of financial model to western markets? "For us it's a big experiment. We see it as potentially being huge but it's unproven in the action space and in North America. For us it's like we want to understand how it relates to CounterStrike in Asia, which is a territory where microtransactions are much more evolved. Then we're going to take some of the experience that we gather from that and see if we can bring CounterStrike Online to the States and Western Europe or develop something in a new game that applies that more organically from the design."

http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=874&page=2

Quote:
Shack: Is that model something you'd consider directly applying to a Counter-Strike sequel over here?

Doug Lombardi: I mean we'll see. You know, my gut tells me that whatever the IP, the game probably needs to be developed with that model in mind. So whether it's a CS property, or TF, or some new property, I think what's more relevant is that the game needs to be thought of with that free-to-play, micro-transaction model in mind.

Of course it wasn't surprising, it's VALVE. After their commercial rape of pretty much every country except America, and the lunacy of releasing L4D2 less than a year after the first, I wouldn't put anything past them.

The five people (Rob Laro, Shawn Spetch, Steven Skidmore, Spencer Kern, and Shaylyn Hamm) each received money from Valve generated from royalties from the in-game items they created. The amounts ranged from $39,000 to $47,000 for just two weeks of sales. Two players had to fly to Valve's offices in Seattle to get their checks because the amounts were so high that PayPal couldn't handle them.
