Please tell me ur joking. After Rome Total War, I reckon Codename Panzers was the second best RTS of 2004 easily. (with the patch that is)

I suppose you didn't play the Empires-sequel, Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2, or Kohan 2, then... there were a few more titles this year too, did you play them all?

I doubt it, and if my doubt is correct - you may retract your hesitated judgment.

Yes I have played all those games except Age of Empires 2.

IMHO, the 2004 RTS are ranked in following order

1. Rome Total War (the lord of RTS, need I say more)

2. Codename Panzers (awesome gfx, great tactical strategy, very difficulty, great enemy AI with patch, awesome production value)

3. Ground Control 2

4. Warhammer 40k

5. Soldiers Heroes of WW2

6. Homeworld 2

7. Kohan 2 ( no matter how good gameplay is, gfx are just too much of a turn off)

Well, the ones that call themselves "the more educated part of the gaming community" considers Codename Panzers a childs version of tactics and strategy, where realism bows down to nuisances.

I think Soldiers is a better game, on all accounts.

You are right about that Fisk. Codename is NOT a realisitic game, the elements of war and strategy are made up and have no real basis.

i agree soldiers is much more realistic than panzers, but panzers is much more fun to play. i'd any day prefer gameplay over realism where the two conflict

i dont see how anyone could prefer panzers over soldiers, in a realism or gameplay standpoint. the feature where you can manually snipe and aim your turrent totally took the rts game in a new direction. also the ability to drive tanks instead of just hoping they drove the right way helped to alievate a serious hiderance to all previous rts games. maybe this all is not revolutionary but it is evolutionary. now any game in the genre missing the ability to drive and shoot is seriously lacking, imho.

I know. But I was sorely disappointed by Soldiers, not because of what it is, because I truly think it's a really good game, because it contains so many elements that other developers won't even dare to implement. I am really frustrated with the developers because they didn't take it further - they had this marvellous engine, and they made Soldiers into - basically a really colorful version of WW2.

I'd like the epic scale of Axis&Allies, the knitty gritty feel, where the colors aren't so "bright", the feeling of mud, dirt, and rain. You know, the atmosphere that sometimes pops up on a few occasions in the modern gaming world.

I've played a little bit of A&A last night, and I was really impressed with this game. It has nice atmosphere, as fisk said, it's a real feel of war.
The gfx are really nice, and with a tank fight it look awsome.
