There was a DJ who came out in Houston a few years back, maybe 10 or so. His name was DJ Screw and 'screwed and chopped' southside tracks - they slow the beat down, deepin the voice and scratch the song...some of em sound good, some of em dont. Anyway, he start Swisha House Beats and all that shit.
He died recently by oding on Lean (permethazine and codene cough syurp mixed with sprite, "purple drank") and this other guy, Michael Watts took over and his shit isnt near as close to DJ Screw's shit.....ridiculous.
Im really into southside rap - Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Swisha House, Project Pat, Jim Jones, Three Six Mafia etc etc....these kid should have his ass KICKED!

The rule of thumb is anyone who says they are a 'gangsta' or 'thug' probably isnt and is just a fuckin poser.

I'd have to agree. I don't know the exact history of the word, but even if there was originally a group of people that legitimately tried to emulate the gangsters of Al Capone fame in an urban environment, they would probably have ditched the monkier long ago.
Also, I think that the word "gangsta," as it's used today, is a fucking insult to the gangsters of the 1930s. Those people had a style. They were organized. They were clean. They took showers. They created a brilliant system.
Al Capone was untouchable. They had to book him on tax evasion, not racketeering, murder, and the dozens of other things he was overseeing, because of how cleanly the operation ran. They had every aspect of their business carefully mapped and planned out, including the stupidity of their minions.
Look, on the other hand, at the system of today's "gangs" - at the top are drug lords and middlemen, who just sell their products. What's below it is essentially a decentralized, disorganized, redundant, violent, and largely unneccessary wasteland. The only thing that keeps these morons from killing each other is the color of their shirt and their territorial boundries - both of which seem to fail regularly.
Comparing Capone's gangsters to "gangstas" is like comparing a streamlined, efficient, and enormously profitable corporation to a bad distribution network. One is run by, essentially, a CEO and a board of directors, the other is run by merchants and distributors.
Were Capone (or an equivalent) present today, they'd wipe the "gangstas" out in days. Those who weren't wiped out would either go back to living on their McDonald's paychecks out of fear, or be assimilated, forced to take a shower, dressed in a way that makes them look like members of the human race, and made to work as the only thing they're good for - dumb muscle.

99% nowadays, in 2006, suck and are so unoriginal it isnt funny.
How many times are we gunna hear about how big a nigger some guy is, how much cash he has, how many broads he fucks etc etc
Tupac, Bone Thugs, Biggie etc...those are rappers, people who had/have something to say that actually matters and presents a viewpoint.
Not some next black guy who's be dressed up by his fashion dept., had someone write some easy to remember lyrics and then record em

To my defense, I did spend 3 years in a ~80% black high school in Brooklyn. I lived with these types of people, took classes with them, had friends, went out, etc. So I know the lifestyle. I still think it's stupid. The gangs of today (bloods and crips primarily) are still morons, because generally they're run by warlords in the classical sense - people who might very well be 23 years old - but have everyone else in fear or respect of their authority. The only thing that's "good" about gangs at all are people like the D-ceps who try (and fail) to keep the peace.
My question to you is not how black you are or how many people you know, or how much you personally associate yourself with this lifestyle, because those are your issues to deal with. Just tell me, what the fuck is there to glorify about a culture that lives, essentially, off of internal conflict? These "soldiers" are not kept in shape. They're kids, faced with very real, very violent situations. They snap and do crazy things to themselves and each other. A friend of mine shot himself a couple of months back with a gun that I once had pointed at my head. If you think you've got the balls, call his parents and explain to them why you think that 50 cent (his favorite artist btw) is so glamorous.

He has/had a story to tell and wanted to make it somewhere. Now he has all the month and cash he needs and makes songs that appeal to 13 year old teeny boppers as oppose to those who actually supported him when he was a no body.
If u wanna hear some good 50, listen to the shit he came out with before he got shot.
Way better flow and voice. His voice changed when he got shot and now he has that stupid ass slur right.
