Auto-tune is the worst invention in the history of music.
15 years ago Enrique Iglesias was caught "singing" with his microphone ON (autotune-less version) in a "live" performance in Swedish television:
(to be fair, he didn't know the mic was on since it was supposed to be playback)
Here's another live performance with him that is a bit better (and it's not a mistake this time):
He's not a good singer whatsoever and he still sing plenty out of tune. He sounds like an amateur that would instantly get booted from X-factor auditions.
Modern pop singers don't need any vocal skills to become pop stars since autotune was introduced. I've never been into pop in general but there were a lot more songs that were pretty damn good pre-2000's with artists that could actually sing.
There are quite a few modern popular pop singers who can sing (Florence Welch, Adele, The Weeknd, London Grammar, Sam Fender, Hozier etc.), but the average quality of mainstream music in general has indeed gone down for multiple reasons - with its fetish for the ridiculous autotune and lowbrow personae being two of the main culprits. Not that I particularly care, though it kinda mirrors the decline of our society as a whole.
On the bright side, thanks to the accessibility of music these days genres like metal for instance have been seeing a massive resurgence and are healthier than ever. Same with rock/alt-rock and nu-electronic genres that have way more visibility than before, creating their own followings and new niches.
