Though the sci-fi elements remained mostly in the backstory aside from the very end of VI and VII (Here, have blaster weapons and just finish the game already. )though said backstory was fairly interesting even if it was rarely used.
But freed from Ubisoft's mishmash fantasy setting the series could go anywhere if anyone would pick it up. Although the popularity of the dungeon crawler genre and RTS genre aren't at their best but who knows, could end up being picked up by some decent developer / publisher company despite that. (Like Gearbox...oh wait.)
EDIT: Although in comparison with the other "grandfather" RPG games of the era it wasn't mismanaged into hell..
Ultima 8 pre-alpha Pagan and Ultima IX for which there's no words to describe how much of a mistake that was though the MMO survived until it faded away and EA killed the sequel for it.
And Wizardry saw Sir-Tech unable to recover though Wizardry 8 was a pretty strong final entry to the series...and then it became a JRPG, heh. (Actually several Wizardry JRPG games.)
Oh yeah there used to be a thing called TBS, oops.
EDIT: Well it's still clinging on, not everything is a third person cover shooter, yet.
(There used to be a thing called hot-seat too, offline local multiplayer.)
EDIT: I guess there's hybrids too such as Creative Ensemble and SEGA with their Total War franchise having turn-based strategy phases and then real-time combat phases.
(Though the player can micro-manage and is encouraged to do so or the AI will clusterfuck itself into crushing defeat even against a numerically inferior and poorly equipped opponent.)
EDIT: And Civilization of course, still going strong. (Though perhaps a bit closer to grand strategy, well depending on how the player sets it up.)
(XCOM is trying to reboot as well, not doing to terribly last I heard.)
EDIT: Well regardless of how I try to dig myself out of this mess the genre isn't quite dead just yet, it's having a tough time competing against the big sellers of the gaming industry but it's still going.

The three biggies when i was a kid: Ultima, Wizardry and Might and Magic RPG series. Loved them and i still play some of them from time to time (well the ones that were re-released on GOG) .
And because there is one intro that always makes me laugh, here:

M&M's cutscenes where always hysterical
I played the fuck out of MM6-7-8 and loved every second of it.
MM9 was meh, and the tenth, although somewhat nice, was too much Grimrock for me.

I remember in M&M7, in my goodie shoes playthrough. when the land that i've got with blood and sweat was splitted between the bloody tree huggers and the hummies from Erathia. And i was like "what the fuck dudes?! really..."
Bloody hell, now i get that tingling that makes me install those oldies again and play them to death.
