I bought the Steam version earlier today, is it rubbish compared to the GOG one? Will mods and everything work the same?
I ask because I've had issues in the past where I could only get things working on GOG versions :/
Edit: Modded it up, still feels a bit janky. Probably playable though, I'll find out tonight!
steam is very likely just one of the older gog builds at worst or the same at best.
Mods I used with the GOG version
1. Unofficial Patch UAP 091225
2. HQ Map Pack
3. Extra Animations Pack
4. Hi Res Patch
5. HQ Music Pack (MP3)
6. arcanum_disableSpellNoise (essential for your sanity if you play a mage or use any active spells)
7. https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat
commandline options used:
-scrolldist:0 -scrollfps:70 -doublebuffer (late game with a lot of companions I used the -no3d switch as well)
I picked one resolution lower than my native res, as the 2d art gets too tiny with anything higher. 1440x900 was a huge improvement over the native 800x600 the game offers.
I installed the gog version, the unofficial patch and the HQ town maps, then the HighRes thing. I selected my resolution (1680x1050) and set the fonts to size 18 which was the largest of the two options I had. But the font is still small. The UI seems small, too
And is realtime combat the normal way to play the game? It is the default.
try a lower resolution. I think rule of thumb is, you need to be comfy at reading the original, font 14 of the patch, not 18. so go a res lower until you can read without strain. it will still look good, higher res is basically just zoom out in a 2d engine.
combat mode depends on your character and skills/weaps. experiment and see which suits your char better. do know that technology/firearms are not recomended for the first playthrough.
Plus turn-based combat could sometimes get stuck during AI turn. When this happens quickly double push spacebar to temporary switch to RT and back to TB.
Im playing this in windowed mode but because the fonts are small, im playing at a much smaller res than my desktop's; so is there anyway i could enlarge the game window to match more of my desktop while keeping the game's res intact? Resize and maximize dont work on the game window
I played it in one resolution down from my native, and used 14 font when installing the high res patch. 1440x900 on a 1680x1050 screen. there's also 18 font if you are still having issues. this is how it looks with 14.
Spoiler:
Also, I hope you aren't playing a gunslinger/technologist on a first playthrough. you gonna get rekt without knowing the game meta, it's impossible to play those classes.
It's practically a ready-to-go package containing the game with all the tweaks and bug fixes available already set up, along with graphical improvements and compatibility/performance ones.
I haven't tested it yet, but sounds like the real deal to play the game with modern hardware in a proper way (I should replay it too sometime in this life, if only I had the time dammit ).
Good find, bookmarked. Been wanting to do another run - never managed to finish a techie playthrough. Just got a few (dozen) games to get through first.
if you want a super easy build, just go full caster and pick Harm to start out with - that'll carry you for a good part of the game. And for the love of all things unholy, don't play with that piece of crap real-time mode, it's awful.

Updated my backlog
BTW, on a forum one of the modders mentions about the new planned version in a couple of months.
Version 1.5 of the High Resolution Patch for Arcanum has been released
Version 1.5
The patch is now configured and applied via a config file, no more command line prompts.
Many more settings and features are now available in the config file, to be further configured by the user to their liking.
The vertical position of the middle screen menus (e.g. inventory or load save) can now be set to top, bottom or center (default).
Most UI graphics have been cleaned up, the top shading has been removed and full size borders have been added.
Added fullscreen backgrounds to the main menu, 3 variants are available: just black, fade to black, fullscreen wooden background (also applies to options and credits).
Compiled a completely new crisp sharp size 18 dialog font which is true to the original.
Increased preload distance, so that you won't see stuck objects at very high resolutions. This feature is also user configurable.
Increased broacast distance, so that the followers can heed your commands at greater distances. This feature is also user configurable.
Splash screens are now centered.
Fixed all lingering UI bugs, such as the map menu navigation button not working properly.
Resolved the issue with the Half Ogre Island captain not spawning.
Added options to force the game to use windowed mode, software rendererer and double buffer.
Scrolling distance is no longer patched to be smaller, and both scrolling distance and scrolling FPS can now be configured in the config file.
Streamlined and cleaned up a lot of code. All patch scripts are fully commented.
Fixed a 'run as administrator' prompt on newer versions of Windows.
The DDrawCompat wrapper is included in the patch and can be optionally installed, recommended for Windows 8/10 users.
And Drog is also updating his unofficial patch to 2.0, many new changes inbound, like finally being able to choose the progression paths of your companions
Shame not too many games do that adjustment to dialogue and in this case even the journal plus of course NPC reactions (Just try getting a decent quest completion reward.) but I guess today it would double the amount of voice acting required in addition to require clever alternative writing for pretty much the entire game.
Arcanum and the first two Fallout games worked pretty well, Fallout 2 was overall a bit more humorous in tone though.
EDIT: Come to think of it didn't New Vegas have some of these mechanics for a low-int character?
EDIT: VtMB: Bloodlines and it's Malkavian line too, plus the Nosferatu being required to pretty much hide from public.
(Most of these had some adjustments here and there but not quite to the extent of these two.)

Exactly, we're talking about a time when Role Playing games were all about..simply put, and in the most literal sense, playing a role, with all that entails in terms of feedback and interactions with the surrounding world.
Playing the game with a certain type of character meant experiencing a certain experience that completely differed from a second playthrough done with a diametrically opposite personality. Those were simpler times in terms of presentation, but hell, the amount of depth and sheer satisfaction of actually being part of a dynamic world that reacted to your actions was immense and unmatched by nowadays idea of cinematic movies in disguise with apparent sense of freedom.
New Vegas indeed had many specific dialogue options for a low-int character as well, resulting in bizarre outcomes and situations, though Fallout 2 had possibly the best and most thorough implementation of it in my opinion, that was genuinely mind-blowing and downright hilarious.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
