Seem to be going well for me in-game ATM. The first snows started to fall, and I have a lvl2 sofa in my base to sleep on, couple cupboards for storage, and a PC waiting for the peripherals.
I can be out and about in the freezing temps at night for quite a while before I need to find a fire-barrel and I can hassle pedestrians for money pretty effectively at this point. I have mountains of junk in my base that I can burn if need be, so I'm semi-confident I can survive the winter. Bit the other hobos keep saying it will be brutal, so who knows.
Progression is kinda slow, but the general gameplay is good enough that I don't mind. After 13 hours I have a total of 2 perks unlocked (one that allows me to search garbage piles, not just bins, and the one that raises charisma permanently).
Really wish there was a fool-proof way of walking around in the rain. I have an umbrella and it only slows down the accumulation of wetness. Even paired with a plastic bag poncho I get soaked fairly fast.
Jesus, don't become addicted to anything in this game. I didn't pay attention during a friendly binge with another hobo and became an alcoholic. Took me 2 medkits, 4 breads and 45 minutes worth of fuel in my fire barrel to get rid of it. And the only reason I managed to survive it is because I unlocked the health/illness/morale regen bonuses for my shelter. Otherwise I would have been forced to chug several beers every day and spend extra on detox stuff so I could enter places that don't allow drunk hobos. Suffering withdrawals during winter nights is not fun. Without bedding it was too cold, with bedding I woke up too early, way before I had to put new junk on the fire.
Finally suffering through the withdrawals was definitely worth it. Sure taught me to keep an eye on my alcohol intake.
Yeah, I can understand that. I bet if I ever find myself stranded in the Amazonian jungle for real I'd develop some deep distaste for Green Hell as well (I know it's a clumsy analogy, but it's the best I got).
Not gonna lie, I was incredibly reluctant to give this one a try, I thought the subject matter would be either way too irreverent and insensitive, or way too grimdark. I guess having experienced homelessness it tipped the scale to the depressing end for you.
Are you still on the PLAZA release? Apparently there's some fuckery with the crack where it won't save progress correctly, corrupt saves if you choose to name them etc.

No. It was borked for me too, so I just ended up buying it. After 20 hours I don't have buyer's remorse. But if you can spend a couple hours without closing the game, the plaza release is a pretty good way to try it out.
Also might be worth watching at least this video. I had no idea you could move around minesweeper-style during the dumpster diving minigame. There is practically zero tutorials.
Being a hobo a couple of times in the past, I don't find this game entertaining at all. Roleplaying depression.
the subject matter is certainly not the best topic to make a game about, it is quite disrespectful. nevertheless, i think the developers have done a good job of making players appreciate some of the challenges of this 'other side' of city life, in a somewhat respectful matter (neutral perhaps might be a better word).
either way, i don't think anyone else is going to showcase what life is like on the street - let alone make a good game out of it like they have here. i still have friends that just have no idea what life is like for other people, because they live in rich neighborhoods and don't have to deal with any of this on a day to day basis - basically just laughing at them or blaming them for whatever, like it could never happen to them.
overall i find the game mostly not depressing in that you can actually spend most of your time helping people rather than being a murderer.

there's a lot to learn in this game mechanically and geographically, and nobody will tell you anything.. except maisner perhaps

After 30 hours I just finished the first season a couple minutes ago. Obviously didn't become king, but feels like I could do it this next go-around.
I'm already at the point where there's little difficulty left. I can easily get enough money to afford pretty much anything vital after a couple minutes of begging at the train station's main entrance, and I rarely need to do even that since I can spend a little bit resting at my base and all my health, morale, even sickness regenerates while sleeping. I have a toilet and I'm well on my way to have a working washing machine as well. After that I think I'm pretty much self sufficient and won't have to visit the charity shelter for cheap laundry and toilet any more.
