I don't think crytek was the one of the two who decided to have this available for free and is anything close of being the one who's pulling the shots here.
I think you meant amazon's achievement.
I also like how your posts from the previous page seem to imply that there weren't some major financial issues before this
And BTW, where are their games, aside from that dino demo?

Are you serious? How is today's news an Amazon achievement if the engine is only available for 1 day?! It might make money for them or it might not. Who knows?
But, Crytek? They already got the money. This is their biggest licensing deal, ever (yes bigger than their military deal, the US army spent $57M but that was on both software and hardware and the HW wasn't cheap, so Crytek's deal must have been bellow $50M). This IS a big achievement for them.
And all the more reason to consider it a great achievement if it indeed saved them from bankruptcy

Who gives a shit? Where are the games?
Who cares about a possible next Crysis game, or Ryse ( ), or whatever else they develop?
They're about as relevant as Epic.

The mental gymnastics, they are amazing!
Once upon a time crytek were one of the developers for which I had most expectations. They were ok financially, had just pushed a game out that carried the SP genre a bit forward while also making some of the most impressive visuals on the business.
Fast forward to now, no games, no expectations after their last diarrhea of a game, whoopdedoo a new engine.

Yeah, it's becasue they are distributing it for free that they had to pay a huge amount of money to Crytek. |
They are obviously going after Unreal and Unity, but it seems an odd way to go about it. Why license and rebrand CryEngine? It seems to me like just buying it outright would be the better deal, unless there is some sort of tax or other incentive not to. And surely that basically destroys Crytek's engine sales business. Who is going to pay for CryEngine when you can get the same thing for free from Amazon?

Buy the engine exclusively for themselves? I don't think Crytek would be selling their biggest asset.
Buy the whole studio? I don't think they care about the game developers of Crytek.
And yes, for now the engine is going to be about the same that you would get from Crytek but any updates Crytek makes Amazon won't be getting them (and vice versa) so at some point there will be notable differences.

That's the point, their asset is now worth basically nothing, outside of making their own games (which has proved a flop, hence why they got into engine licensing in the first place).

I'd argue that if there were going to be updates by Crytek then THAT would have to be explicitly stated and since it hasn't..
Amazon says they have their own staff that make updates to it:
| Quote: | Q. Is Lumberyard based on CryEngine?
Lumberyard is made up of proven technology from CryEngine, AWS, Twitch, and Double Helix. We’ve hired some of the best game technologists in the world, who have already made over 41 pages of additions, fixes, and improvements to Lumberyard. For example, we’ve integrated a brand new networking layer, GridMate, so your engineers can more easily build low-latency, high-player count, multiplayer games. We’ve also created a new launcher and project configurator so your team can get set up without engineering help. We’ve also created new workflows so your artists can iterate faster and create higher-quality content, including a new particle editor, 2D/UI tool, and cross-platform asset pipeline. Please see our full release notes of additions, fixes, and improvements to learn more, and tune in to our GameDev Blog for more news on what we are working on. |

Yeah, confirmed: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/265425/Amazon_launches_new_free_highquality_game_engine_Lumberyard.php
| Quote: | Lumberyard's core engine technology is based on Crytek's CryEngine. Amazon licensed the German studio's engine and got "full, unencumbered access to the technology" to build upon, says Mike Frazzini, vice president of Amazon Games.
However, Lumberyard represents a branch of that tech, and the company is replacing or upgrading many of CryEngine's systems. Future versions of CryEngine and Lumberyard will continue to diverge.
Developers at Amazon's Seattle and Irvine, California game studios are making improvements directly to the engine, and a central Amazon tech team that has drawn staff with backgrounds in both AWS and game engine development oversees the engine's progress.
At public beta launch, Lumberyard already has components that are not based on CryEngine. Aside from adding the AWS SDK to the engine -- allowing for native C++ access to its services -- Amazon has also brought in new low-latency networking code based on what Double Helix, the Southern California studio it acquired in 2014, developed for Xbox One fighting game Killer Instinct.
"We're going our own direction here, and over time that will increase substantially," says Eric Schenk, general manager for Lumberyard, who spoke to Gamasutra about the new engine.
The engine already has "an entirely new asset pipeline and processor" as well as the new Double Helix networking code, says Schenk; up next are a new component system and particle editor, and "a number of other things aren't quite ready to talk about yet" will follow. There's also CloudCanvas, which allows developers to set up server-based in-game events in AWS using visual scripting. |
They got full access to (an already outdated) build of CryEngine and a license to do as they please with it but there won't be any future updates from Crytek (nor will Amazon share their updates with Crytek.)
In a year from now there should be many notable differences (for example different DX12 implementations).

Ah ok, that makes things a little different. Although it still seems to me like this is more a desperation move by Crytek than good business. They needed an immediate cash injection to survive, but I don't know what the long term prospects of their engine sale/licensing business are if someone is giving away a modified (possibly better) version of the engine for free.

At list when Cryteck goes under the engine wont be lost.
They would probably be better off with a licence/ upgrade deal with Amazon. But I guess Amazon wanted to cut any links... probably after pondering with the prospect of working with Cevat Y

Now Available – Lumberyard Beta 1.1
| Quote: | | Today, less than five weeks after the launch of Lumberyard, we are pleased to release Lumberyard Beta 1.1. This update includes 208 improvements, fixes and features; and is available for immediate download here. With Lumberyard Beta 1.1, we are releasing several significant workflow improvements, introducing mobile support, and extending the functionality of Twitch ChatPlay. The updates in this release are in addition to the new autoscaling features and region additions we announced for Amazon GameLift on March 10. |
| Quote: | Component Entity System
One of the areas we are focused on with Lumberyard is making the engine extensible by developers without changing engine code. Our new Component Entity system is built to enable easy engine extension with new components. Content creators can drag-and-drop and combine those components into new game objects. They can then make reusable assemblies of Component Entities, which we call “Slices.”
For example, if you have a Slice that includes a row of street lamps, you could also include broken light bulbs on a select set of those street lamps. |
| Quote: | Substance Integration
Substance enables artists to procedurally create materials using a visual, node-based system, so they can build beautiful worlds faster than traditional hand-painted methods.
Additionally, you can use Lumberyard to modify Substance material properties in real-time. For example, you could use the Flow Graph to cause materials in your world to rust and age over time, or enable players to customize the world with new colors and textures. |
| Quote: | New Twitch ChatPlay Features
Our customers have given us a number of suggestions for Twitch ChatPlay, which helps you build gameplay that interacts in real-time with Twitch viewers. Developers have told us that one of the most fun ways to engage fans on Twitch is by enabling viewers to vote on game modes and outcomes.
For example, you could ask your spectators to vote on who they think the best player was in a match, and then arm those players with different weapons in the inverse order of strength in the next match (so the worst player may end up with a nuclear plasma torpedo, versus the best player’s chicken bat). |
