Is there any way to play the community maps if you're running the Steam-less version of Portal?
I know there are some on thinkingwithportals.com that can be downloaded directly, but even there the majority of maps by now point to steamcommunity.com, and those seem to only be available through Steam.
The reason I liked Portal 2 more than Portal 1 was that it had more story, more fps and unique environments instead of just puzzle-room after puzzle room. It felt like a more complete game. I hope Portal 3 (if there ever is one) will pick up on that and extend it further.
Valve is working fast towards a console++ Big Picture Mode running PC standard.

Q: So, it is mappack?
A: No, it is not. Conversion is a story of new characters. Conversion is an anwser to most questions from Portal and Portal 2. Conversion is a new big and fun experience you will not regret to receive.
Q: You have mentioned "new things", but what exactly is new in Conversion?
A: Beside the storyline, we have tons of new features, such as:
New characters
Nonlinear plot
New testing elements
Different endings
New locations of Aperture Science
Q: Whoa! And you say it's free?
A: Yes, yes, and yes. It was free. It is still free. And, naturally, it will be free!
Q: So, what game is it based on? Screenshots look like Portal, but others are Portal 2 ones.
A: The mod is based on Portal 2 engine. The storyline takes place between Portal and Portal 2 period of time, so some of maps are made in original Portal style.

Damn, missed this news somehow. A buddy has an X360 and we were gonna get portal 2 for some co-op action. Now I can just play it on the PC. Nice. Need to grab one of those wireless adapters to use the x360 controllers wireless with it.
Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Initiative is a mod for Portal 2, inspired by TAG! The Power of Paint. The familiar Portal 2 gels are now contained within the Aperture Science Paint Gun Device and it's your job to test it out!
Featuring a new personality-core and an original story with 27 polished levels; the mod offers an exciting and fun experience in varied and interesting new locations throughout Aperture Science.
Introducing gels as the core gameplay mechanic completely changes the way you solve puzzles, explore, and survive all the challenges thrown at you!
edit: wait there's a price? So it's a non-Valve made retail-like standalone mod for Portal 2? Interesting! Valve hasn't released one of those since Day of Defeat 11 years ago. edit: actually Garry's Mod is more recent and a much better example. edit: wait it's not standalone? Uh, okay..

Wait so is it a "Mod" by Valve people? Otherwise isnt it against rules to ask money for mods? Then why call it a Mod and not DLC like all the cool kids are doing thse days. Or even an Expansion. Im kinda confused to who is actually behind this

The "Valve" part of Valve gave them the ok to use the Portal 2 assets and its engine.
The "Steam" part of Valve accepted it on its store (like they have done with thousands other games so whatever).
And that's about all they had to with this game.
DLC means official content released by the game's developer/publisher. It usually isn't free, although there are exceptions eg Valve's DLCs, some devs release their first DLC as free and the rest as paid and so on.
Mod means unofficial content released by a third party for a game. In 99.999% of cases it means it's free, but stuff like Garry's mod and this are the exception of the rule. You can call them "games" if you want, but eg wikipedia's definition of mod nowhere does it state they have to be free: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_%28video_gaming%29

I assume Valve takes bigger cut in this case than usual ~33% "{
