Ok, thank you...BTW, does the fucking xRay engine crash still happen with the retail version ? cause it was totally unplayable for me with the former cracked version.

OK, just gave a try about this one with 3D Vision. Very impressive, 3D effects are excellent but you need to turn down many video settings. Anyway, very worth to replay it again; won't probably regret to have finally bought it.

I saw some interesting mods and decided to give the game another playthrough, only to realize that it's still completely unplayable on max details + dx10 lighting even on my new rig (oc'd i2500k + gtx570) Laughing Crying or Very sad

Thankfully the game is smooth in dx9 (and good looking too, especially with the FXAA), but still..I find it quite hilarious Razz. At least they learned some optimizaton tricks and improved the situation with Call of Prypiat.

Though feels so bad that such a glorious franchise has no future :S

Some of the DX10+ effects are very hard on performance, especially this games variant of HBAO and similar tweaks, perhaps one of the reasons things were scaled back a bit in Call of Pripyat although they added DX11 support as well. Smile
(Poor optimization or implementation I guess, engine has it's moments but it's a bit flawed.)

Haha unfortunately there aren't many great mods for Clear Sky, the game is like the black sheep of the Stalker franchise and the bugs surely didn't help. I would go with the classic CS: Complete http://www.moddb.com/mods/clear-sky-complete : it's basically a major graphics overhaul, but includes other great mods like Atmosfear and fixes some nasty bugs too.

I tried Faction Fronts as well, it adds some nice stuff but I encountered some problems with the AI/groups and decided to restart the playthrough with the Complete mod instead. Razz

Sadly when it comes to more hardcore stuff, the Misery equivalent for CS isn't ready yet ( http://www.moddb.com/mods/mystery )

Version 1.0 was released, but not on ModDB. Here:

Only the Narod.ru link works though, and it's slow for a 1.5 GB download.

Not that bad, ~800KB/s here.

Don't know if I should thank or insult you though, I was saving my STALKER playthroughs until I had some sort of system upgrade and now you might have just ruined that Mad

I was disappointed with COP - the game just wasn't as well designed as the first one. Sure the first one was more linear but it also made things more focussed. In COP you have a large area of a lot of pretty dull things and it just didn't have the power of the first game. I really should play Clear Sky again - it's said to be the worst of the three but I'm sure it's not as generic as COP.

Does COP get better after you leave the first area?

I think most people would answer yes, but your definition of "better" seems to differ from most people.

I'd say it's more of the same, but then again I actually don't think that CS is really that bad and rank it around the same as CoP.

Still much, much better than a vast majority of the games released in the past few years, including lots of AAA (Reaction) titles (crysis series, I'm looking right at you).

Gee, what do you think? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Crysis I'd rate at least decent (although I've bought MW3 and MW2 soooooo Scratch Head).
And Blops2 SP turned out to be pretty decent, IMO.

With better I mean more interesting set pieces, more tension, more atmosphere.

The original STALKER nailed it in terms of locations - you also were rewarded for exploration. In COP, you have to work a LOT harder to find anything. Most stuff you pick up can't be sold, artifacts are a lot harder to find and have to be tracked down, etc. They basically made being a STALKER a job in COP which is taking the fun out of it. The locations are also pretty generic - abandoned buildings with nothing to loot and basically just empty spaces. The quests are also a very mixed bag. It just feels like they lost inspiration and were just phoning it in to make some extra money for Stalker II.

When you consider how brilliant the first game was (SOC) it's a shame how they kinda lost track of why it was so great.

Really? Those are things that made me love it and I feel that the first one was the one that felt generic, not CoP. To each his own I guess... CoP for me was the only one that I really liked.

thx guys, ill give misery a shot after im done with divinity II. i never completed clear sky previously because i hated the damn real time quests. i kept running back and forth and always being late. Embarassed i need to find a mod to extend those mission timers.

my favorite in the series is COP for gameplay and the original for atmosphere. i dont expect much fro clear sky but i do need a post apocalyptic fix after a long fantasy themed game.

CoP was the only one I really liked too. I think it's much more rewarding for exploration.

Stashes in the first one were terrible. They were empty unless you found out the info about the first, so there goes the exploration reward. There were very few locations with pre-determined loot. In CoP though, stashes are all pre-determined and can be discovered without first finding info about it. It was also more free-form, and you could do stuff in your preferred order, while the first one was quite linear.

To each their own.

For me SOC still has something special the other two don't have. But I have to admit that CoP does quite a few things better than its predecessors, particularly the improved artifact hunting mechanics. Also, I didn't hate Clear Sky as much as most people, but that must be related to me rarely suffering from the technical problems other people experience Razz

I think I said it here before, but I see CoP (don't really know about the other 2, but they didn't feel like that from what I've played of them) as "how would Gothic be like if you would replace medieval-fantasy with post-apocalyptic and action with shooter, while keeping the RPG aspect where it fits". It really does a lot of things the same way as Gothic, especially the way the world feels. It doesn't hold such a special place in my heart as the Gothic games, but it was a really interesting and enjoyable experience.

I enjoyed all the three games immensely (both vanilla and modded) but SoC will always have a special place in my hearth in terms of atmosphere, story and locations. Razz Clear Sky was pretty great as well, with the interesting faction wars feature, it was only let down by some bugs and unpolished feel overall.

CoP was almost bugs-free (at least for me), the gameplay felt more refined with the weapon&armour upgrade system being fully realized. It also had more interesting side missions. Maybe a bit easier than the previous two games, but with the Misery mod it got 3 times more challenging and atmospheric, almost like a classic survival horror where you need to be extra-careful and a single bullet is enough to put you down for good.
