i like him (Stephen) in interviews and i've talked to him over email and he just comes off as a nerdy gamer who loves old school games. but yeah... the business itself, not so much always... the remasters are quite low effort, Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition was shit.

Im at a point where im praying that whatever they do next is not some game that interests me because they're gonna release a worst game than the original and everyone is gonna jump on it instead of playing the originals, which outside blade runner, i think each and every one of them were already playable with the bare minimum effort.
Thank fuck they put Kingpin and Sin on hold. If i remember right, Kingpin even had "reimagined gameplay" on its announcement. Kingpin is though as nails, its one of the most difficult traditional shooters. You get mauled instantly. You have to keep moving, you have to track the target as best you can, you have to aim like a sharpshooter. When i saw they wanted to remaster that, there is no way on earth they'll ever make that playable on a controller. Naturally, the reimagined gameplay came very soon in their announcement.
I just hope they never get their hands on Unreal or Deus Ex

Sounds bad, so long as you can still get the original who cares.

Kingpin is such an underrated shooter. Gritty as hell and hard as nails, with meaty gunplay, pseudo hub-like levels and all the amusing lines from the perpetually angry ghetto characters. The final sections aren't as good as the rest but the game holds up really nicely thanks to the community patch. It feels like a proper, classic PC game.
It doesn't surprise me that the various quick remustards these days are adopting some lousy tricks to accommodate Coucholeros and Switchers, those represent indeed the target audience and sadly, there's not much that we can do to stop the inevitable. It must be said however that despite the drama, Nightdive did an excellent job with the System Shock Remake, although that's a different type of game with more slow-paced mechanics and a static controlling scheme that begged for a full revamping. Quite a few PC classics would benefit from a similar treatment, while others would be trickier and probably would end up going through some kind of compromise. We'll see, for all we know Nightdive might never do another full-on remake again since it's a job that requires more time and effort than they're willing to give

hold up, so ND are doing Kingping and SiN remasters too? I thought those ended up being vaporware and were done by other studios.

Not sure if this is confirmed. But overall it does not seem implausible. If the licenses are in limbo, nobody is earning money. ND could just give every potential license owner 5% of revenue or so from the remake and the publishers would still make more than they do now. So maybe it's just that somebody is actually willing to take care of this?
