oh wow. They did not rerecorded the voice over? It sounds so out of place.

Anyway - It's a bad idea to remake this game. I only remember it for great graphics and best looking water at the time. Open world was cool but very aimless

The voxel tech and one of the earliest uses of bump-mapping was impressive, running primarily on CPU limited the max resolution a bit though which hurt things unless you played the game in windowed mode. (Even the updated version until patched.)

A interesting albeit not very complex story and how the characters reacted to the players action made the game world seem more alive too and NPC's had a limited schedule so they wandered around and performed various animations.

I do remember the combat system being a bit clunky though and it takes time to get the bigger weapons and the ammo for these though tech is scattered everywhere and there's even some platforming and stealth rounding out the gameplay a bit. (And leading to some frustrating moments when trying to climb or avoid detection too.)

Guessing budget is still a big concern especially after Kickstarter for a more expanded remake of the original initially failed but they're still attempting to get it done though probably with less focus on expanding the game from how the Kickstarter and stretch goals were laid out.

Bit skeptical to how it will turn out but it can't be the worst remake ever (To put it bluntly I doubt anything will ever surpass the fuck up of how Konami treated Silent Hill.) so here's hoping for a positive surprise when it's finished and released. Smile

...Jumping back and forth between these gates figuring out where you're trying to get to and where you're actually being sent to, avoiding the tougher guards and bigger monsters and falling many many times when trying to platform but Cutter just doesn't cut it. Razz

And the saav-gam gem..banana thing to save the game with by squeezing it for a few seconds. Very Happy
(Hope you're not busy being killed.)

EDIT: Though I actually don't remember that much of the game now, I do remember really liking it back when it was first released though blending third person action adventure with some lighter role-playing systems though it's mostly dialogue and not shooting rice farmers in the arse because it's fun.
("While we didn't really like him and while it was pretty funny to see that fat farmer running we all decided to stop talking with you and provide services because you're a total ass.")

(Though in a more alien tone and with religious motifs and dragged out and emphasized ha ha.)

Must be a lot of older games that could benefit from a faithful remake (Maybe less clumsy controls?) but I doubt that's unlikely these days due to risks and some of these franchises having been kinda dead to where the current target audience might not even have heard about the game. Publisher then providing a strict window of release and next to no budget or out sourcing to some unknown studio doesn't help either.

Anyways, will be interesting to see how things go for Outcast, here's hoping it'll be a quality release. Smile

Yeah, the voxel was extremely heavy on the CPU, I remember not being able to properly run the original on a Pentium 2 so I had to wait some years until I upgraded to a Pentium 4..and even then, the framerate was still of the very cinematic type. Very Happy Hell, even the 1.1 version recently(ish) released on GOG/Steam does struggle occasionally to maintain 60fps at high resolutions with modern CPUs.

The original game still has a very distinctive art style though which is pleasant to the eye despite the flat textures (thanks to the palette, water effects, but also the parallax and so on), something that this remake doesn't seem able to replicate. At least the gunplay looks old-school here but it's difficult to dissect, I guess only time will tell.

In which way do you mean ? Graphically-wise, this doesn't look good at all. That's even more damaging considering the original had ground-breaking graphics for the time.
The Talan models look straight-up horrible, I was really hoping they'd do them over. Sad

How was it aimless ? Well, if you only remember this game because of its graphics..

Yes please does it follow the original closely? And a 1:1 remake? its one of the games i always wanted to play never could get it to run when i bought it back in the day, and GoG version runs at 24 fps cause of engine limitations. And the discount thing angers me as I own the orignal game box copy Embarassed Mad

Visuals are a bit "different" and it seems sound and music are re-used from the original game but it does seem it also is mostly untouched though camera controls were re-worked a bit.
(In addition to Cutter's face... Razz )
(Body almost makes him look like a school kid too backpack and all, perhaps he already did so in the original though but damn, your face.)

From what I can tell this Second Contact is pretty much a 1:1 remake of the original, there are some adjustments and changes but it's still the same ol' Outcast on a more modern engine. The visuals are an obvious improvement (they somewhat recapture the style, minus the water that doesn't animate properly, something that the voxelized version did well) and the performance is rock-solid for me. Don't expect complex facial animations, good lip sync or dynamic movements though, everything's on the very low-budget side and based on the classic concept Razz - including the voices and music which have been left unaltered.

The core gameplay is more or less the same, with the addition of a stamina bar and a redesigned interface. Shooting is old-school too (except for the new zoom when aiming), modern mechanics aren't present here in order to preserve the classic feeling. I'd say it's a decent remaking job, it was clearly made with limited resources but those who find the original game too obsolete should give this one a try. Personally, I don't mind how the 1999 version handles, I find it very much playable (the patched-up 1.1) and I actually like the charm of such old titles, but it's good to have something more modern as well.

Yeah, ixigia im at a impasse should I play the original and get over the FPS or play the remake. Personally I love the charm older games half compared to new money making dlc shit shows that we have today.

Haha yeah, it's a dilemma alright. I'd try the original first, then if you still find the framerate issues and controls jarring, just go with this remake. The most recent GOG version of the classic Outcast is the 2.3.1.23, the one that also received a lot of recent patches since it still ran terribly when it was re-released in 2014 (if you can't find it anywhere, just head to Good Old Downloads)

They actually run the old game code in the background it's a pretty interesting approach:

Yes they are, the quality of the voices isn't the very best in French but I wouldn't trade them for any remaster Very Happy
The music is still splendid So Much Win

I was wondering how the hell the game could be such a 1:1 copy of the original, well that explains it. Interesting read, thanks ! Smile

Just wish they didn't change the combat at all really, I liked its former slower pace - but well, it's 2017, and we didn't get cover mechanics so that's that. Can't complain here Razz

One of the best I've ever played ! Smile
