Played the game at relaese, got back for a bit after it went F2P. It's a good game, alright, but F2P has some serious limitations. Only several (4 out of 12, I believe it was) classes are available, a lot of endgame content is blocked, and there's other stuff too - your max gold is capped, for example, and not at a very high value either. Not only does it make AH pretty much unusable, but also, since some gear is bought with gold too (like PVP sets, even though gold is just one of the things you need), and the prices are often above the cap... well, you get the idea.

That's how it was then, at least. Not sure if anything's changed since.

Good old times... Blocking city entrances/exits with mammoth mounts... Or alternatively kick people with horse down from mountain paths to death Laughing. Game also was so fucking unbalanced at release, bard or what the hell the class was, it was so damn op (i was 35lvl and bard was 20lvl, he just annihilated my plate tank char Very Happy).

They changed a lot of that in December. All classes are now avaliable and there is higher gold limit.

It was the first MMO to use a combo system for melee skills (though sadly that didn't extend to magic). That little fact in and of itself makes it worthy of praise in my opinion. Also, throw in the fact that they used a gory, gritty, and mature storyline (aka weren't pussies pandering to the Rated T market), and AoC will always hold a special place in my mind.

It's sad that Funcom seems to be the only dev. that has tried ANY sort of innovation in the MMO market in the last 10 years (The Secret World is another such example). It may not have worked out the best for them, but I'll be goddamned if they don't score points for at least having the balls to TRY!

I liked it when I first tried it, but I gave up pretty much because I felt like I was really limited. The free to play model seems much more reasonable now, so I'm downloading it again to see what's what. Smile

I played it, it entertained me but it wasn't really keeping me around. Might just be my state of mind right then but I really didn't get sucked into the atmosphere. So I bet the quest/story writing wasn't that interesting to me.

On the combat mechanics: I wouldn't say twitch or combo mechanics are an innovation for the genre tho. It's a gimmick for some game designs it works for others it doesn't.

Might also be the fact that if I want combat like that then I play other genres. Most people who don't like the typical combat for MMO's are mostly looking for a persistent world game not so much an mmorpg in my opinion.

But at least in Conan it didn't really obstruct either, so they get points for thinking up a useful mechanic instead of just wanting to put in something new for the sake of being new yet it limits more than adding. (yet, if you do it 50 000 times like every other thing in an MMO, it is as 'boring' as anything else )

But by all means bring diversity just don't go: this style is dead now let's make everything like "newfancymechanic". We have seen that the past decade

The mature world of Conan is what they did brilliantly, I usually hate over the top gore and nudity for no sake. But it's the world of Conan and it should be there! There was a justification for it and it was done nicely. (eventho my GF whines it's all the same, she's wrong! Laughing )

gave this finally a proper try (i bought it back '09 and didn't play long) andreally enjoying it. The world is just amazing and you really get an epic feeling wandering around in it. It's quite huge and beautiful. And finally i've the hardware to actually running it maxed out and combined with sweetfx it's just .. aaahh Smile

So, if you're in need of your mmo fix as i am, give it another try. You won't regret it Smile

Also it is far from dead. There are only 3 servers now (PVE, PVP and Gore-PVP ... whatever that means). I'm on the PVE server (i played on pvp before and it was rather frustrating, since people camped playgrounds to gank players lol).

Anyway, the server i am on is very well populated and it's really fun.

Just to feed my curiosity - is the backpack/bag/equipment screen still restricted to 8 items like it was when they went f2p?

Age of Conan was always completely underrated. And released at the worst time ever... In a very bad state (too early)... with a very bad PR decisions... (WoW killer!1111! and Tits and GORE!! BUY BUY!!!)

And yet, objectively, it's a very solid MMORPG.

Even actual roleplaying is great in this.

all 3 of their mmo's are released way too early and all turned out to be the top of the mmo world lol.

Not to mention they have 3 distinctivly different settings and game mechanics for all 3 games.

anyway, i love my funcom mmo's Smile

What killed AoC for me was the system requirements for it's time. When I got to the main hub I got like 10 fps. Unplayable.

The thing is, the game looked even better in the closed beta. There was parallax mapping almost everywhere, among other things. They've reduced it so much, most people don't even know.

It sill doesn't look anywhere near as good today. (Still one of the best looking MMORPGs though).

Dx10 somehow is extremely stuttery. I mean, it runs at 60+ fps, but it has weird stutters...

There seems to be a complete lack of AO in those shots, and the shadows seem to be what very minimal? they look like base shadows and not dynamic.

*EDIT* But to your defense, since the DX10 update, the game looked worse. It's propably because they changed the whole lightning. It's still funny that they didn't bring back the higher-res ground textures from before that patch.

it's dx9.

And it's possible it looks different on your screen, then it does on mine (contrast, brightness etc wise).

I believe this is what Microsoft used when they showcased DirectX 10, this was one of the early games adapting that API if I remember correctly.

I didn't say you are using DX10, I said that they changed the lighting with the DX10 update. In general Smile
