As for tweaks I disable the search indexing service
And change
"Customize Start Menu" -> "Search other files libraries" to "Don't search"
This way the start menu search will only find stuff within the start menu which makes it really fast and a reliable program starter.
e.g. to start firefox i could type WIN + "fi" + Enter. very nice imo

As a visual tweak i make the UI a little smaller
In "Windows Color and Appearance"
-> "Caption Buttons" to 16
-> "Scrollbar" to 16
-> "Border Padding" to 0 < border padding refers to those 4 pixels around every window

That's why it's always the best to do dual boot on 2 different physical hard drivers, that way one will never alter the other. No messing with boot managers, cracks, OS selection lists. Simply select which physical hard drive to boot from and that's it Smile

Guess I should buy another hard drive sometime in the near future then Very Happy

Don't be so sure, often the bootloader gets installed on the 1st drive, regardless of where you install the OS, or at least this has happened to me before.

Regarding vista and 7 bootloaders conflicting, there is a fix posted in the antiwpa forum, check the last page of the win7 activation thread, check all the posts because there is a typo in the script and a post that says how to correct the problem.

No. Bootloader gets installed on the hard drive which is set as a first boot in bios. So if hdd A is set as 1st boot hdd, and you install OS to hdd B, boot manager will be installed to HDD A.

are there any win7 performance tweaking guides out yet?

I'm in the process of cleaning up the HD on my desktop so sometime soon would probably be an ideal time to format...

probably going to go back from x64 vista to x86 win7 as well...

I wrote some good normal tweaks earlier that don't involve disabling processes. But if you want to go process disabling route I don't do that or recommend it. Saving 5 or 10MB of ram after disabling many processes just isn't worth it. One day something won't work and it will drive you mad trying to figure out if it's some process you disabled or something else.

You gotta be crazy to install updates that don't come from Windows Update. If they are final and legit updates they will appear on Windows Update, simple as that.

this has probably been answered, but since there is no search within a topic I'll just ask.

does windows update work fine with the rtm version of w7?

This happens on my Vista installation, some programs that are supposed to use context menu just won't show the entry... I asked on various windows forums and nobody was able to help me. On othe installations instead they work... I have no idea what's the cause of this bug, and it's really annoying. Didn't happen on Win7 yet tho....

Did you guys perhaps installed 32bit version of the apps on a 64bit Windows? You can't load a 32bit DLL (ie context menu extension) in a 64bit process (ie Explorer). Smile

Nope, some progs work and some don't, regardless of "bits". Actually, if I go to the programs options menu and enable the option to use context menu extensions and save the settings the new entries actually appear, but they vanish at next restart or after some times. Other times they don't appear at all.

Been running W7 RTM for just over a week now, and can say I am quite satisfied with it. Really quick, smooth, no hassle. Definitely a better OS than the shit that was Vista when it came out. Which was obvious to everyone apart from fanbois Smile

I used Vista before for a loooong time. Now im using W7 and im saying: W7 is Vista!
But Vista got hated so much and everyone jumped on the hatewagon, they remaked and called it Windows 7. This strategy seems to be working... above*

I installed VISTA and ran it for about 2,5-3 months solid. In that time, I experienced games perform slowly, Windows crashing, and hard drives swapping... and then the odd bluescreen. Now most of the bluescreens were driver-related (back then, the driver support wasn't that great), so I completely disagree with what you're saying.

With that said though, I shitcanned VISTA after that. And decided not to upgrade until the next operating system was released. And that philosophy has worked pretty well for me in the past (install, skip the next version, install... etc.). Maybe you're right about VISTA with Service Pack 2. I haven't tried that, and I see no reason to, as Windows 7 runs applications about as fast as XP, I have no issues running multiple clients of EVE (as I did with VISTA) and I have no problems with the Adobe-suite (CS2 back then).

Microsoft has blacklisted that leaked key that's been circulating, probably via some later update.

Also certain testers, Technet perhaps, will get free editions of Windows 7 Ultimate for having tested W7.

No it does not affect the loader. Also there is no reason to turn off windows updates. The upcoming updates that are already leaked don't affect activation with loader. So as of now this whole blacklisting is just scare tactics.

Infact I had to delete system32 by formatting it manually since the Windows 7 installer never formatted my partition originally, hence how all the chkdsk errors came about.

So there Smile
