It's hilarious that they couldn't replicate the original game's dynamic water effects at all, and just said 'screw it, leave the flat texture'
There was OpenOutcast too which looked pretty promising, a shame that the project was discontinued.
If they decide to divert from the original concept this time around and try to modernize it, I think it's safe to say that we can expect the obligatory features such as: invasive HUD with aggressive markers to avoid "confusion", contextual automatic jumping a-la [insert next gen 3rd person action game], huge hitboxes, additional FOLLOW-based companions to facilitate the journey, wildlife not included (exclusive pre-order DLC content)..and this is the conservative hypothesis!
Outcast – Second Contact announced – Remake of the classic Outcast game, coming in early 2017
Quote:
Bigben announced that it has signed a licence agreement with the studio Appeal to publish the video game OUTCAST – Second Contact, a remake of the cult PC game Outcast. This expanded and updated version of the 1999 game, currently being developed by the team behind the franchise, will be released at the start of 2017.
Yves Grolet, co-founder of APPEAL, said:
“Outcast succeeded beyond our hopes and we take great pride in seeing that it remains a classic for many players today. We’re now using the same team and passion to work on the remake that fans have been demanding for years. Our objective is to show just how modern the game is with cutting-edge graphics and improved gameplay, while retaining the charm of the original which won over so many players.”
Alain Falc, CEO of Bigben, added:
“Outcast is a cult classic that is part of the video game repertory. I am delighted that APPEAL came to Bigben and have the faith in us to supervise the evolution of such a popular franchise, which people will enjoy discovering or rediscovering on next-gen consoles.”
The first screenshots for OUTCAST – Second Contact will be coming out in a few weeks, so stay tuned for more!
Back to Adelpha: Outcast – Second Contact reveals its first images!
Bigben and Appeal Studio have unveiled the very first screenshots of Outcast - Second Contact, the remake of the cult PC game Outcast, a pioneer in the history of open-world video games. This expanded version in full HD of the 1999 adventure game, highly anticipated by fans of the genre, will be available in March 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
A fantastic and futuristic adventure, Outcast uses cutting-edge graphics and reworked controls for optimum immersion. As Cutter Slade, players can dive into the extraordinary landscapes of planet Adelpha in an attempt to pierce its secrets in order to prevent a terrible catastrophe... and along the way will uncover many things that will even surprise fans of the original.
Outcast takes place in the near future when Humanity has just discovered the existence of a parallel world, Adelpha. The American government, which was behind the discovery, sends a probe there to investigate. The experiment is a success but a native of Adelpha, a Talan, attacks the probe and causes a distortion of space-time that threatens to destroy the Earth.
You are Cutter Slade, a former Special Forces operative, assigned to escort a group of scientists sent to locate and repair the probe. Nothing goes as planned, however, and you find yourself embarked on an adventure on an unknown planet, with the future of two worlds in your hands.
Outcast has been hailed by critics and received numerous awards for the quality of its graphics and innovative gameplay, and is a milestone in the history of video games. The franchise will celebrate its return in March 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Outcast – Second Contact will be presented for the very first time by the studio Appeal, during Gamescom 2016 in Cologne, from August 17th to 19th.
Looks nice, hope it turns out to be a proper treatment.
Well the controls can't be worse at least.
That said the patched original version of the game works fairly well and also gets rid of the limited resolution options by allowing use of the GPU instead of CPU for some of the rendering tasks.
(Default key bindings do take a while to get used to however but I believe you can remap them.)
EDIT: Glad they found a publisher to fund it or well I guess that's how it worked after the initial Kickstarter didn't quite make it and I guess regardless of if it's a publisher or a Kickstarter they would probably have involved the XBO and PS4 platforms eventually.
Appeal Studio has released two new screenshots for OUTCAST – Second Contact. OUTCAST – Second Contact is the remake of the classic PC game Outcast, and promises to feature cutting-edge graphics and reworked controls for optimum immersion.
As we can see, these new screenshots show visuals that are up to what someone would expect from a current-gen title. Moreover, Appeal Studio has remained true to the game’s original art style, something that a lot of Outcast fans will appreciate.
Unfortunately, though, it appears that Appeal Studio has used chromatic aberration, resulting in some really awful and blurry results. Here is hoping that the studio will give an option to disable that particular effect.
NIce!
Let's see if they can make water look as good as in original

I don't remember Outcast using chromatic aberration though it did use some interesting tech for a game back then such as CPU voxel terrain and even bump mapping for certain surfaces.
(Wonder if this is on UE4?)
Yeah even with the Kickstarter money I'm assuming a re-creation of the entire original game would be a bit of a undertaking even without any of the more ambitious stretch goals being reached.
That failed though and I'm not sure the 1.1 update of Outcast generated that much income but I'm hoping they can pull it off.
Will be interesting to hear more about the games development as time goes on and maybe it'll reach a eventual release.
(Preferably outside of Steam Early Access or at least without getting stuck in it with little to no progress.)
EDIT: Ah yes they do have a publisher backing them now and planned release for both a XBO and PS4 edition of the game so probably in a better state than I had assumed.
Haha yeah, it's gonna be a seconD contact alright.
It looks very faithful to the original game, but..perhaps too much. They could have improved the animations at least or made them less robotic, without affecting the original gameplay. Lazy bums!
I can't help but feel hyped when I hear this music, those sound effects again.. One of my favourite game ever !
All of the animations look pretty bad though, have to agree. The faces aren't much better, for a game that's so heavily focused on dialogues, that's rather bad. Cutter Slade looks like a villain from Dishonored
Let's hope this gets some good polish !

Extended gameplay This german YT channel seems to have access to an early build to showcase the game.
I don't really feel good about the changes to the combat: shoulder-view, more aim assistances, quicker paced.. I liked the fact that the fights were rather slow-paced, the AI wasn't too dumb for the time so it made for rather strategic fights over large areas.
The walking animation still makes it look like Cutter just shit his pants

Indeed, Zoidberg's crab walk is really a must these days
I'm not convinced either to be completely honest, the next gen tweaks are quite unnecessary if the aim is to preserve the original feel and present it in modern sauce. Not unexpected though, taking into account the different audience and everything. Maybe we should consider ourselves lucky that they didn't go for the full-Gears with the pop-a-mole cover system xD...yet!
There is something about it that reminds me of those shitty gothic sequels... Not sure what.
I have a bad feeling

The promo footage looking fantastic showcasing features such as engine tech and game mechanics like crafting which are then under utilized or completely different in the final product?
(Crafting being shown by breaking down a sword or what it was in all sorts of different components compared to how it worked in-game or the rain tech which while neat mostly had pre-placed puddle spots plus the game world was fairly static and also very linear in progression.)
Eh I'm thinking they'll stick fairly close to the "classic" Outcast but yeah they're overhauling stuff like controls and in the process things like combat and AI might see some changes, will be interesting to see later on gameplay showcases and perhaps comparisons.
(Is the clunky "savgaam" or "save-banana" item still used for saving for example?)
