Nope, it was known for a while that development never stopped: http://kotaku.com/5300592/duke-nukem-forever-still-in-development

From June 2009: [3D Realms/Apogee Ltd.] admits that it has continually worked on the development of the DNF for many years, and continues to do so.

http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/12/15/interview-we-chat-with-sam-mcgrath-about-fractiv-what-happened/

So it goes like this:

- intel bought the dev team and told them to make the game so that it showcases their new graphics card to beat nvidia and amd, then intel canceled the hardware, and told them to kindly GTFO.

- The IP and all code is owned by intel so they can't work on it anymore and Project Offset will remain dead forever.

- Nowadays they're developing iphone games.

- They also have an action RPG style game with a Western vibe tentatively titled "The Gunsmith" in the works for release next year but they haven't announced which platforms they're targeting; PC and/or consoles.

Yes. Dead forever. When intel told them that they don't need them anymore they tried to make a contract that allowed them to continue developing the game but sadly they didn't manage to accomplish that. Now the engine and all code belongs to intel, and at least for now intel do not care about developing games at all.

Some other interesting things from the interview:

- the original version of the game (what little we've seen in trailers) is described as a "fantasy Call of Duty" (think cinematic fights in a fastasy setting)
- they had signed a contract with a publisher that was funding them for 9 months, but then the publisher changed their strategy and decided they didn't care anymore about making PC games
- intel wanted from them to develop an engine for tech demos etc to showcase their graphics card to developers. The game wasn't the #1 reason they acquired the dev team, but in any case they told them they can continue developing the game as long as it shows how awesome their new graphics cards are going to be
- after intel acquired them the singleplayer was going to be episodic with the first episode being released in time for the Larrabee cards
- intel was to market the game the way Microsoft markets Halo; as the absolute flagship title that will get you to buy their card

In the end intel got what they wanted in the first place; an awesome engine that they own the exclusive rights to use, should they need to market their hardware. From what I can understand they only cared about the engine, not the game.

Get developers interested in intel's graphics hardware, similarly to their other tech demos:

The first device, code-named Knights Ferry, has reached prototype status and is shipping to “select developers.”

I agree with the trying to lure in a major publisher to finance their game, but not with it being vaporware from the start. If Intel allowed them to finish the game, they would.

Indeed, everytime there's a mention of this, I feel like I'm about to cry Sad. It would be nice if some company would buy the rights, hire the team and then get back to finishing it. Sounds like a fairytale though...

After these guys got the huge shaft by Intel they tried getting the rights back but Intel wouldn't let them. Fuckin pricks.

Garus I don't know all that much but in short this small indie studio made a decent game engine (For when it was first announced anyhow.) and then created this game from it, after a while (years?) Intel then acquired them and was to help with development but gearing it for their own GPU series Larrabee, however competition from AMD and NVIDIA made Larrabee fall behind and with Intel then making CPU/GPU combinations and other plans the studio had the project cancelled (No funding.) and was laid off shortly afterwards with Intel acquiring and keeping all created assets. (Code, game engine progress, copyrights and such.)

Hadn't Intel dropped out the development on the Larrabbe GPU, we would've still be witnessing fuss and chatter over this project. Fairly speaking, it looked like it could be something really beautiful. Shame, no extensive gameplay footage had ever been shown ... Sad

Ahaha yeah, the good ol' times when Intel was bullshitting about coming out with a parallel core architecture GPU to rival Nvidia and ATI hyper-evolved dedicated GPUs, supposedly rivaling their hardware acceleration with pure parallelised processing power Laughing Laughing Laughing
