The thing with this game is that is had/has the best online community ever! Except for the very few ex wow-ers l33t egocentric powners who think wow's the only real mmorpg out there. I remember how my guild used to gather and play in-game instruments every night, or just walk and explore the game without specific purpose. I'm not even a LOTR fan and i dont like any other LOTR game out there but the months i've spend playing this one were very enjoyable. And the dungeons are great, hope you enjoy!

/carebear out | I have similar experiences with SWG. Ever since that game, I have never encountered another MMO that was so RP friendly. I remember my times as an entertainer. I had a friend with who I used to play together in the Bespin cantina, chatting with regular costumers, getting invited to player-cantina openings as the official entertainement, receiving huge tips from satisfied regulars and happily giving out buffs for newcomers, pro-bono.
Sniff...and SOE had to ruin everything...sob...

If you like LOTR, then yes. The world is really well done, you can visit everything up to Rivendell from the books (Moria, Mirkwood and Rohan are p2p expansions) graphics are still holding up nicely considering its age and music is also nice. Just keep in mind that the overall gameplay is very WoW-ish and can get a bit slow at times. If you can look past that, it's a very good choice to play.

It's free (to a degree) so just give it a try but be aware that to get anywhere in the game you need to either grind a lot or pay up. I'm not a fan of the content since Mirkwood and Turbine's profit > all stance, and the game crashes and lags a lot lately, but the vanilla areas and Moria are awesome - if you can bear WoW style gameplay. The lore is great and mostly true to Tolkien, many areas are well designed and beautiful, some of the best dungeons I've seen in any MMO (Carn Dum!), classes have a unique feel to them - Runekeeper, Minstrel, Champion, Warden are all very fun to play.

@tet666
I guess LOTR still is, just because its LOTR and no similar MMO exists.

The only thing Daybreak are interested in saving, is as much profit as possible for as little work. Expect RMT to be everywhere, and lots of new 'retro servers'.

I played LOTR way back then when it first came out.
It was VERY enjoyable to play, thanks to the whole LOTR atmosphere, the quest and the landscapes.
But at some point (i think it was midlevel back then around 30-40) it suddenly got very boring.
Forced myself to play more but eventually said goodbye.
Didn't play it for more than a month i think.

That was my pretty much my experience. The best thing about the game was the "wow factor" of exploring all the Middle Earth locations. But after that wore off the gameplay wasn't very interesting.

I remember enjoying LOTRO a lot at first. Loved the design of the areas, it had a few nice features (the Titles tied to doing activities, the PvP was actually a little interesting for the time). But once I reached a zone that was boring, I didn't find any reason to stay.

Both DDO and LOTRO would be among the best MMOs if they had modern engines.

Guess you can forget about any further content updates (or was it already considered complete earlier?) - will be kept on life support with a skeleton crew until it's completely sucked dry of last drops of revenue. Never played it myself but I heard it was pretty good for an MMO back in the day.

From what I remember, you can make all the coins you need through in-game deeds and rewards and stuff with which you can buy the expansions in the in-game store. IIRC anyway.
