Duke Nukem Forever was officially announced on April 28, 1997 along with the purchase of a license to use the Quake II engine and the intention of releasing the game no later than mid-1998. Original prototype work on the game had begun as early as January. In August and September, the first screenshots of DNF were released in PC Gamer.

#2
3D Realms did not get the Quake II engine code until November 1997, and the earlier screenshots were simply mock-ups with the Quake engine that the team had made in their spare time. 3D Realms unveiled the first video footage of DNF using the Quake II engine at the 1998 E3 conference.

#3
In June 1998, the 3D Realms team switched to Epic's Unreal Engine.

#4 (well, in a lesser degree but still not a small change)
In 1999, 3D Realms announced that they had upgraded to the newer version of the Unreal Engine.

#5
In 2002, after hiring several new programmers, the team completely rewrote the renderer and other game engine modules, beginning work on a new generation of game content. Broussard estimated that around 95% of the previous level design work was scrapped in the process.

I would love to see the implementation plan for DNF. Did they even have one? Or was it just a "haha guys, guys, let's make a new Duke game, I'll get started by coding some constants right here and we'll just wing it, it's going to be fucking amazing!"

How else can you end up having such massive reboots of a project like this? They make it sound like they just (suddenly!) decided to use Unreal tech, but had no experience with it, then upgraded (eh heh heh) to a new engine build, then ... then ... oh my.

Either this game was sunk by the project managers or it was all a social experiment for the lulz. I refuse to believe that all that talent just sat there for years not knowing what the fuck to do. Or maybe they were all playing MMOs.

And i hoped this madness will be over when they closed 3D Realms.

Anyway, i'll leave you believers now.. there is no point in trying to talk sense into you bunch anyway. Smile Enjoy your "miracle".

edit:
You realize tho, that they can always add to that todo list of theirs, say when they decide to rewrite the game to yet another engine, that would add another 100-150 or so new tasks. So if you plan on holding your breath until release, well.. better have good lungs.

nah.. i couldnt resist to stab.

You guys need to get Duke.Nukem.3D.Atomic.Edition.High.Resolution.v10.8-MasterFaster, it's so awesome Very Happy

Some notes from the nfo:

 Spoiler:

Loads of new stuff (weapons, like 100+ fan-made map packs/campaigns, all the official levels etc.), hugely improved graphics, practically everything is updated and made better.

Just started playing the Atomic Edition so I've barely scratched the surface... Love the double-barreled shotgun tho, it's just as kickass as it was in Doom 2.

I think you can still play with the original graphics as well, it's still worth getting for all the extra content (can easily run each via a launcher or separate batch files that comes with the release).

There are some screenshots and movies popping up today.

And last night we got this on the 3DR site:
