What surprises me is that he, as a right wing nutter and conspiracy madman, managed to get such a big audience. They should ban him from the internet altogether (not because I'm against freedom of speech etc. but because he's just polluting it with his hate and stupidity).

Well, „the internet“, if by that you mean a bunch of popular private companies who offer communication services and platforms can broadcast whatever the fuck it wants (within the law). But thats not the whole internet and there are alternatives for the altenatives.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Well, the only one on there is Lauren Southern. I also assume you didn't watch the video as you would understand that she's not just being lumped in there (they actually interviewed her).
I guess this is why VGA didn't link to the video as it's easier to misrepresent with a screenshot.

Lauren Southern is in VGA's image, hence 'the thumbnail'.
Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson are displayed in the video you linked that I supposedly didn't watch.
 |
But they're not being lumped in with _Alex Jones and the shit he says_ but rather with "victims of censorship" (after that they're not shown nor mentioned at all if I recall correctly).
And I was talking about the video of the screenshot in VGA's post not the one I posted.
Not only that but Lauren Southern does peddle the "conspiracy theory" of white genocide.

What i get out of this thread (i haven't followed this guy at all) is: I'm not against free speech, BUT... I don't agree with him, i don't like him, i think he's nuts, so ban him. Somewhere in all of this is a contradiction.

YouTube has every right to ban whoever they want, they hold as much power as people let them have. If enough people start disagreeing with their policies then they can use alternative websites.
I'm being uncharacteristically capitalist here, but if they really mess up they'll pay for it in the long run no matter how solid their monopoly is at the moment - we've seen Internet giants crumble to dust before.
I get that they hold a lot of power and could possibly try to manipulate the masses, but that's the whole story of the "new" Internet which has been mainstreamed. It's not really different from any other media now, and it's up to individuals to look further than their noses, as is the case with most things in life.
Legal regulation could be a solution, but couldn't they just move their HQs/servers somewhere else and be done with it ? What about the legislation differences with their viewers' location, and that of the content creator ? Determining whether a discourse is an expression of free speech, hate speech, straight-up lies or just innocent ignorance is a nightmare.
I'm not in favour of total free speech in the public space, the American way. I think most of the posters who are happy about Jones's ban agree with that point of view.
One can spout his conspirationist crap privately, but I disagree with letting every lunatic rave about straight-up lies with no consequences - especially when their words actually impact lives and lead to violent action.
I agree that YT should be fair and ban extremists from all sides of the spectrum if they start doing so, but it's no surprise they'll go for the most visible targets with the most sizeable communities. I can name a good number of extreme right-wing figures, not so many for left-wing ones.
Banning Alex Jones creates a very dangerous precedent for YT, for which they'll be held accountable for every extremist being given a voice on their platform.
Then you're glad you're not part of YT's directing moderator team it's honestly pretty impossible to remain fair and to have clear-cut principles.

The ban proved him right pretty much.
Problem with the ban is that it silences him, leaving his voice out of the common ears. So when he spouts bs, only his legit followers will listen and the ones who can argue his voice will have to support him to listen to him and argue him and it wont happen. Only legit followed will download his app. So it distances the divide even further.
His app is trending. The ban is good for him.
Millions of loonies will now watch his app, watch his ads.
He doesnt have to share with youtube/spotify. Just Google and apple.
Hes making bank now and his audience grows since who's gonna bother going out of an app to cite their own sources? Who's gonna read the comments of disagreeable voices when the app is just a circle jerk?
Is the ban justifiable? Now? No.
Should have happened years ago.
Should have happened when the sandy hook bs started.
Should have happened before that even.
They let it fester and grow. It was good for their revenue cause everyone wanted to hear how dumb he is.
Does it set a precedent for other conspiracy theorists? Idiots on the internet. Yes it does. Can it fuck up the left leaning pundits? Of course it can. Enough reports against tyt and itll be shut down. Tyt constantly pins the left against the right calling for riots and harm in the streets. Black woman assaulting a Mexican while back as an example. Until the woman of colour was identified.
Hes being unpersoned now. His app is trending. His conspiracy theories prove right. And it strengthens the idiocy of the right.
Private company or not... fear is set on the right. People are worried. A new platform might grow out of this l which will divide the masses even more as only the select few will go to it and get stuck in their echo chamber.
Same happened with gab.ai and minds and bitchute and other platforms catering to those who dont side with YouTube/twitter/Facebook. It becomes an echo chamber. And the divide grows.

Its actually easy to remain fair and have clear cut principles. But not at a company that doesnt value alternative opinions. That's the main issue here. Twitter/Facebook/google all have a leftist echo chamber. But at the end of the day the right calls are being made. The nazi website. Alex Jones. Child porn sites on youtube. Exploitation is being removed. So at the end of the day even if you dont agree with their policies, or their left leaning agenda... they still manage to keep trash out.

When should have they banned him then ? When he talked about the Sandy Hook shooting ? What's so different about it ?
And what principles should they apply ? I'm genuinely asking because it seems like a clusterfuck to me. Allowing any extremist to spout his bullshit without limitations reinforces the divide as well.

The problem with Alex and people like him, is that most of their "theories" usually stop right at boarder of bat-shit-crazy-town where people will actually believe him. I remember having a conversation with friends about Alex and David Icke, how they both sound kind of plausible but David really crosses the line with his lizard people schtick while Alex still is somewhat grounded.
Anywho, fuck Alex Jones and his bullshit, I hope they ban him from the internet altogether ,that insufferable schmuck...

He constantly spouts angry divisive shit.
Sandy hook he called it a false flag and over time pretty much pissed on the graves of the victims. The nazi blog site got shut down the moment they lolled at the victim of Charlottesville. Rightfully so. Infowars should have been nuked for the same thing. Years ago. I havent followed his bull shit or done more research.
Infowars site is getting plenty of action.
Hopefuly they stick to the ban, but they dont stop reporting on him.

Free speech isn't an absolute thing or a free for all and if abused it should have repercussions. Spreading hate and suspicion isn't free speech.

True. Youtube (and indeed most social outlets) is a privately owned company and they can choose whatever they want to allow or not.

Would you have this attitude if youtube silenced someone rational because some purple haired fat monster of a feminist suggested it? I highly doubt it. Then youtube would have a social responsibility because of their position to be above such things and be partial etcetcetcetc.....
I have no doubts that this guy is a whackjob, but damn, you're willing to sacrifice free speech (or at least start that slippery slope) because of your hatred towards him.
