Not that surprising. It's a small indie dev that...
! Aw, fuck it. That's not it.
The truth is, I don't think they care that much about animations or AAA polish levels. The Forest was rough as hell and still sold. So... why bother if they deliver kinda the 'same' thing that... worked?
No one complained about animations or ruggedness in the first. Most of the feed-back was highly positive. So... 'fuck animations' says the devs.

I think its most people that play survival games, care about mechanics over polish.
Not that polish doesn't help. But for me, give me ps1 graphics with good survival and buildings aspects, over polish and cut down mechanics any day.
Most the core players of games like this, green hell, project zomboid, valheim, scum, etc graphics polish is a bonus if it has it, not a requirement.
Take project zomboid it's graphics are pixel art isometric. If gameplay took a hit for the sake of better graphics and zombie animations, I'd not enjoy it as much.

This is how it should be with everything, core gameplay and mechanics + optimization over graphics, who cares about the looks if game is awful/awkward to play and runs like dog poo.

A good point.
And... there's no critique here (or in my previous post). Just observation. Gameplay comes 1st and looks / polish comes... 10th.
I also enjoyed very much Forest (beta), Rust (the unfinished, alpha version with zombies) or Project Zomboid, long BEFORE some of the (visual) optimizations they have today.
It would be nice, indeed, to have AAA levels of graphics or animations in these indies, but hey, can't have it all. And ultimately... gameplay comes first.
@Nodrim
Spoiler in case anyone doesn't want to know what she is when she shows up, pretty early on, but figuring her out might be something someone doesn't want to spoil:
Spoiler:
yes..she shows up lingering around you, if you dont attack her and dont scare her with weapons she eventually joins as a companion.
@Lopin18
Man that sucks.
So far been OK for us, doing coop with between 2 and 5 people (depending whos online) over about 30 hours of coop.

the graphics and models are pretty good looking, but it all looks like a planted forest, i don't think i've seen a model for a fallen (old) tree, in natural forests there's fallen old trees everywhere. Even skyrim does that part better. If the setting is a forest it should be researched better.. seems to have 3 types of groundcover: grass, fern, bush, and it's all the same green color. so boring.
