There are British expats who have spent years in EU countries, building up careers (also family/social lives) who now face serious uncertainty about their future: their rights to remain, rights to work, rights as businessmen, etc. I guess you are unaware of this, but it is very real. Personally I don't know if I can stay in my host country without some drastic measure (marriage) because I don't meet the criteria for citizenship.
And we haven't mentioned the EU nationals living and working in UK. How hard the NHS and education system will be hit (amongst other sectors) when all those foriegn nurses and teachers stop coming. I can link you to to the articles that show a huge drop in EU applicants to work in these sectors. Is it still a imaginary concept for you? Haven't even scratched the tip of the iceberg. Pound has dropped. Businesses have moved their headquarters in droves to other countries.. Etcetera
