May be you guys didn't like the game, but it is short and I highly suggest to finish it - the ending is amazing, especially the atmosphere and monologue at the end. Such expression. Such passion.

Finished the game, I enjoyed the story and writing, everything else was alright.

"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.

Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

Jesus, what's with all this descending in this game.

We get it you played Silent Hill 2....

This game should have been called The Dark Descent: 2. Laughing

I checked a walkthrough and I'm like 60 minutes tops before the end. It just started becoming less boring.. but the next time I will play I will finish it already?

Damn I kept hoping this game will redeem itself, but with so little time before it ends I doubt it.

I wouldn't call it a waste of time (since it's short), but definitely a waste of money for those that buy it for more than $5. My recommendation: wait for a humble bundle or something.

Amnesia TDD was worthy of full price.

Finished it too, the chinese room definitely made this game

dialouge was great as well as the delivery, story is very grim.
wasn't nerve wrecking at all, infact i wasn't scared the entire game except for one or two moments and they ended quickly.
also graphics and animations are ass.
overall i would say, play it if you're fan of dear esther but not if you're an amnesia one

Finished the game too yesterday, damn what a well told sick story it has, very grim, dark, and disturbing. The Chinese Room definitely nailed this part amazingly, they should stick to storytelling instead IMO. TCR penning the story and Frictional making everything else would be heaven right there.
Also I must mention the sound effects, another strong part of the game. A fantastic job on the developers part, from every little ambient and screeching to the loud collapsing and destruction, every sound was frighteningly amazing.

But I can see why it got so much bashing, the non-existent gameplay and the simplistic level design in an Amnesia sequel is very disappointing, and it just absolutely ruines the game.. TCR has a lot to learn in that aspect, and I hope they will.

So I think I can recommend this game, as weird as it sounds, to those who liked Dear Esther and Gone Home. Definitely not for Amnesia: TDD fans..

Just finished it. I have to say it so a big step backward from the first Amnesia, they took out some important elements that made the first game unique and it kinda backfired here and made the game a lot more simple. Even though there isn't much "meat" to the game, and it feels more like an interactive movie then a game it still scared me a couple of times, and the storyline kept me going as I found it to be quite engaging. Another thing that has to be mentioned is the atmosphere and audio which was excellent, and added a lot of value to this depleted game.

Well, compared to Amnesia: AMFP it is quite scary. And I guess I don't have your iron nerves. I found myself twitching like I'm an epileptic a few times while playing Outlast.

The first part of the game is, if you play it alone, at night, headphones on, without knowing anything about what's going to happen in game.

This.

After about 2 hours in or so it stops being as scary, but the beginning is the best part of the game IMO.

after playing some more, I decided that outlast is not too scary. It is just jump scares and asylum. nice game overall tho.

Amnesia - not played too much yet but it is completely different game.

I don't think I find any game actually scary.

For better or worse I cannot suspend my disbelief to the point I worry about my well being if I continue playing. Razz I often read "oh god, I had to quit the game, I couldn't take it anymore." <- I never felt that.

And no, jump scares do not count. These can scare me the second they happen but they can be just as scary in like.. a comedy.. It's cheating.

So do these "scary" games make me somewhat tense? Yes. Scared? No. Never.
This is probably why I like this genre so much. I enjoy feeling a little uneasy, but if I was legitimately scared to play these games I would for sure stay the fuck away from them Laughing

The Unknown and your own imagination is what causes the scares, once you get used to it or - god beware - start to see through the game mechanics it loses its effect.
This took pretty long in the first Amnesia, the moment I "saw through" the game, I was about 80% finished.
Slenderman: The Arrival is a prime example which goes from "holy shit that is scary" to "ah now I get it" to "ok now hes starting to get annoying, not scary anymore" within less than 5 hours of playing.

The build up in this game was OK but the lack of any decent puzzles and some meh level design means it's forgettable. No where near as good as Penumbra or Dark Descent.

You mean first 25-30 minutes? Because after the first hit form Chris Walker I realized I can evade him easily and there is nothing scary about any of the Variants.

finished this too, never liked the first one , played only 20 min then deleted it .

this one i like, not as much as outlast but it had something that kept me playing, it was more like dear easther for me and the ending was very good. i think i`ll give the first one a second try.

ok so i gave the first one a second chance and realised i like machine for pigs a lot more but i`m gonna finish it too since i`m at halfway through.

le: just finished the dark descent and a machine for pigs is definitely better including the ending .

http://www.edge-online.com/features/the-increasing-breadth-and-diversity-in-games-is-wonderful-why-is-difference-such-a-threatening-concept/

Cut down from the original text:

Quote:
So when Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs was released we were really surprised to still be facing the question (and sometimes naked hostility) as to whether we are aiming to create interactive fiction rather than games. So here is wot I think.

We have been accused of trying to destroy the very foundation of gaming and I oscillate between feeling hugely amused and utterly depressed by these claims. A Machine For Pigs was criticised for its removal of mechanics but very little thought was given to the question of whether or why this made it a less successful experience. The writing, music, sound, levels of immersion and psychological depth were all praised to the hilt but then in lots of the reviews we were heavily penalised for the removal of the mechanics that featured in the original game. Why was that a problem? Well…it just was because, games, y’know, should have, like, mechanics. Duh!

So, for the record: we care about flow and immersion but the apparatus required to deliver that experience; whether it’s story or a traditional mechanic is immaterial. You just use the right tools for the job. The Chinese Room is unusual in that a writer and a composer head up the company. This, I hope, brings a fresh perspective. Mechanics will probably never be our core focus as they’re not the reason we’re driven to create. What this focus isn’t is: an agenda, a manifesto, a fuck you, a provocation, a purge or a stance. It’s simply us being us. We want to make games that we feel utterly passionate about and those games will most likely continue to focus on beauty, narrative, immersion. Basically, good stories told well.

Is Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture going to be a high-octane shoot ‘em up? I think you already know the answer to that. But if that’s what you love then don’t panic as there are plenty of games out there that will float your Uzi-laden boat. If I do sneakily have a manifesto it’s that diversity can only be a good thing. Inward looking reductionism can’t lead us anywhere fun, positive or challenging.

I'm perfectly fine with their games, just don't give them sequels to properties that ARE supposed to have mechanics, you silly Frictional. Razz

TCR will continue making the games they like to make aka "good stories told well." Smile
